Canyon Lake Hawks won the Best of Three this year against the Wimberley Texans after suffering their first loss in a Bi-District game, 60-51.

“I am proud of the guys,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “We battled and played hard and we showed a lot of resiliency and I was proud how they finished this season.”

The Hawks were going through a tough stretch until they finally opened the rim for their last two contests. Wimberley had an undefeated record in their district but all of their counterparts were beaten in the first round of playoffs giving you an idea that CL’s district gauntlet was tougher than what the Texans had experienced.

Oh yeah, and two victories over this team which still gives the Hawks a 2-1 record over this crew of players for the season.

“We played well but missed free throws and did not take it to the wire,” Coach Chapman said. “They were, 10-0 in district.”

CL had beaten the Texans in their previous two battles but could not get anything going in the final quarter as Wimberley was able to sink those important free throws to keep the charging Hawks at arms length and eventual victory.

Wimberley started the game with a hot streak as they raced out to an, 8-1 advantage in the first 2 minutes of action.

           Good Season Hawks!!

Caimen McDonough was able to finally break the ice after making one of two free throws as this young man was once again a beast during this game after finishing with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Throw in 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 block shots and you get the idea that this player was on the bench for less than a minute during the end of the 3rd stanza for a short rest period.

“It was fun while it lasted,” McDonough said when asked about how he dominated during the final games. “We started out slow and we got on a run to catch up.”

McDonough talked on how CL would battle back to tie the score in those first two periods.

Parker Mott did not see the bench except, if a full time-out was called, as the All-Time Leading scorer for a season was on fire to start the contest after scoring 10 points in that first period.

Wimberley would take Mott out of his game after employing a box and one to start the 2nd half. Mott would end this season scoring 462 points which was 56 more than Rory Preiss and Caleb Kreiger had amassed during their senior campaigns.

              Way to Go Hawks!!

“It was frustrating,” Mott said when asked how he felt during the box and one defense employed in the 2nd half of play. “It was hard work in trying to get the ball. But we have to keep working and have better relationships on and off the court.”

Mott was commenting on what the returning players will need to do as they start to prepare for their next season.

CL would have a response to Wimberley at the end of each quarter except for that last period and they could not stage enough fire power to close the game in this eventual loss.

Zac Griffin had been silent most of the 2nd half of this year and Mott had the same experience during his sophomore season. “A year of experience will do a lot to improve his game,” Mott said in response to the anticipation of seeing Griffin game for his Junior year.

The ReSporter caught up with Senior Jarred Rollins, “It was a good season but we came up short of our ultimate goal….it was a fun ride while it lasted.”

                 Way to Go Hawks!

Rollins played himself into the all-time best rebounding year (226) for any Hawk, as he passed Caleb Kreiger (218) who had held that record since the 2013 season.

Canyon Lake has now made the playoffs for the last 3 years which has been the only time this sport has been to the post-season. The Hawks will miss some Seniors that were part of this building project that was started last year after having a higher seed and district finish.

We are proud of you Hawks!!
