Lady Hawks Basketball Finish Year With a lot of Firsts
Canyon Lake Lady Basketball team lost their 7th game of the year after coming up short in their Quarterfinal contest against San Antonio Veterans Memorial, 57-26.
The game was not as bad as the score but this was a superior team as the Patriots used their athleticism to keep the Hawks with season lows in assists (1) and steals (4).
Veterans did bring some awards into this battle as they are ranked 7th in the State and did not suffer any let down from their bench as each player brought a high degree of basketball I.Q. to the floor when called upon.
Reagan Heun ended her career as the all-time scorer (1319) while finishing with 13 points and finished the season with double-digit scoring in 30 of 35 games played this season. This future North Dakota State player led CL in assists (71) and rebounding (253) for the year.
Alexa Ramos finished with 7 points and with her last game passed Katie Williams for second place in points scored (761) and is tops in all-time stats with steals (306) and assists (154) and will certainly be missed next year.
A year like no other as the bar these young ladies raised will be hard to reach for future Hawk teams.
Try 31 wins, when the previous best, was 19 from that 2010 group who had that record for 8 years.
The 31-7 record is the best compared to any Hawk Sport played since the school started 10 years ago.
Top 10 Teams by % since CL Hawks started playing for keeps. Canyon Lake % Year Record **Lady Basketball .816 2018 31-7 Football .800 2011 8-2 **Volleyball .786 2015 33-9 **Football .769 2017 10-3 Volleyball .721 2014 31-12 Boys Soccer .680 2017 16-7-2 Volleyball .676 2017 23-11 Volleyball .667 2016 26-13 Lady Basketball .655 2010 19-10 Softball .643 2017 17-9-2 ** District Champions
A District Championship and going 3 rounds in the playoffs have been established by this group of players.
Tough game to end the season but that pillow to sleep on is still nice and soft with so many firsts to fill a huge hole for a group that finishes their 4 year career with a respectable, 60-68 record.
Coming into their Senior Season the Hawk team had won 29 games in 3 years and were able to beat that total for their final campaign by two more wins. Remarkable, as Skylar Hurst and Char Hutson raised their game which helped compliment the leadership needed to carry this season to new heights.
Canyon Lake will be loaded with a lot of Juniors and have two years of Varsity games. If next year’s Hawks can finish 12 games over .500 ball, then they will have an overall record with more wins than losses.
In 9 years CL has 128 wins and 139 losses, as that first season the team played varsity, but Coaches in all the sports but Football did not record that first year of mostly sophomores playing against established schools.
Certainly a year of firsts and now a veteran Junior squad will take the stage next season with a much brighter look into what could be many more firsts.
Way to go Hawks and Congrats!!!
