CL Hawks Start District 28-4A with Win over Boerne, 12-2

Canyon Lake beat the Greyhounds out of the chute quickly for a run-away win to start District 28-4A play in Boerne, 12-2.

“It felt great,” Hawk Coach John Gallagher stated. “I told our team that we would have to show a killer instinct, especially after what happened last year.”

Bailey Bryan continues her hot streak going 3 for 4 from the plate with a towering home-run over the left-field fence scoring the final two runs stopping the game early on a run rule in the 5th inning.

Bryan has been on the beach for much of this season as the softball is looking like a beachball coming across the plate for this veteran Junior Hawk.

Nine of her last 10 games for Bryan have been multi hits contests while batting a lofty .733 during that span of contests. Bryan was batting .261 when her batting started to heat up as Canyon Lake has now inched their way back to within one game of being even steven with their record after starting this season battling with larger schools.

This game would be over quickly as CL scored 10 runs in those first two innings carving out a 10-1 advantage.

Marley Carrizales was up first drawing her first walk that would grow to 3 base on balls, in this game. Kenzie Sayles would lay down a sacrifice bunt that was helped with a throwing error which would be a problem for this Greyhound team with 5 total errors in this affair.

Bryan was up next with a screaming single driving in a run and then Pitcher Maggie Banks would reach first on another error on Boerne. Adriana Peaslee reached first with a single driving in 2 more runs for a 3-0 Hawk lead

This inning would not be over yet as another Freshman, Kay Puente got into the action singling through the 2nd &1st base hole for that final run in the first inning.

Boerne responded scoring a run with all their damage coming after two outs had been recorded. With 2 singles and a walk for those next three Greyhounds that had a run scoring via an infield error and a Hawk, 4-1 lead and a first inning advantage.

Canyon Lake would get enough separation on their next at bat as both Carrizales and Sayles were issued walks with one out to start a parade of runs for the Hawks.

Bryan’s single drove in the first tally and then a single off the bat of clean-up hitter Banks keeping the money flowing for the inning. Peaslee would have her first of two doubles next up and then Kay Puente reached base on another error when the Greyhound pitcher could not find the handle on the ball down the first base line.

“It is really good to come back into it,” Peaslee said in response of getting back in action after missing a couple of contests due to an injury. “Being such a young team we are staying close knit and I am really excited to get back to hitting.”

On how she feels about the defense and team overall, “We are a very versatile group of players and if we can stay put on that (defense), then we can attack.”

Kay Puente would score the sixth run on a passed ball and Canyon Lake would carve out a 9 run lead, 10-1.

BHS would scratch across one more run in their half of the 4th inning. CL would coax a double play on a ball hit up the middle that Carrizales would snag for the D-P. Then two straight singles and an error in the outfield would plate Boerne’s final run for this game.

That would have CL coming back with a 2-run homer by Bryan on a one pitch at bat leaving no doubts after the ball left her bat for this round tripper and final score, 12-2.

“I told myself that I was going to hit it real hard,” Bryan remembered when asked about her home-run. “I knew it would go over the fence when it left my bat.”

On if she is having fun? “I always try to have fun,” Bryan said. “It helps me to relax.” Bryan also has a routine where she will go to the ground and grab some dirt after a pitch that might have had her baffled. “That is my re-set and I have been doing that since my 8th Grade year.”

Banks gave up one hit in her final inning, but a fly-out and strikeout would be all this Greyhound team would be able to amass, as Banks had mastered her off-speed pitch for this whole contest. That last batter had a taste of two of those off speed pitches for a Hawk win on a strikeout.

Canyon Lake will be back in action when they take on Hondo at home this next Tuesday. This game will be live streamed on Canyon Lake Broadcasting.
