Hawks Walk All Over Hondo in Win, 5-3

Hawks get 1st District 28-4A win over Hondo, 5-3

Canyon Lake got the better of Hondo after walking all over the Owls scoring a, 5-3 victory for their fist win in District 28-4A play.

            Way to Go Hawks!!

Avery Montgomery continued his strong pitching by keeping Canyon Lake in this game before giving the ball to Drew Tyra after reaching his limit of pitches with one out in that 6th inning.

“It wasn’t a pretty win but a W is a W,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla quipped. “Avery (Montgomery) pitched well and Drew (Tyra) came in and out, with fire….we’ve got to get better in the hitting department and we will.”

This game was a loss last year and Canyon Lake is finding ways to get a win and that in itself was a great way for the Hawk nation to leave for this evening with a smile on their faces.

The Owls pitchers were finding it hard to see home plate after issuing 9 walks helping CL to craft enough runs to take the lead and eventual victory.

Tyra has been on a tear the past few games as he was able to get 2 of the 5 Hawk hits and get 2 rbi’s.

Canyon Lake was able to tie the score two times and in the bottom of the 5th,  getting the game even was a key to this contest.

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

Matt Anderson started this inning reaching base after being hit by the ball. That mistake would cost Hondo dearly as Anderson was able to reach scoring position after a wild pitch and then a ground out moved him to within 90 feet of tying the score.

Enter Tyra with a single to help tie the game and that would turn into a double bonus, as Tyra was called to the mound that next inning after the pitch count got over 90 for Montgomery.

So Tyra tied the score which would allow him to get a win if Canyon Lake could finish the contest on top.

Sure enough, the Hawks would score 3 runs after walking around the bases and this was after two outs had been recorded to start the 6th inning.

Ethan Slater worked a full count walk to start the damage. JT Greene would not see a strike for his free pass to first giving Cl two on with two outs.

             Way to Go Hawks!!

Anderson would keep his on base percentage going skyward (.531)  when he worked the Hondo pitcher to a full count walk that would load the bases for the top of the batting order.

Caleb Williams would be the next Hawk to get a free pass to first scoring a run and giving CL their first lead for the evening. Not finished yet, the Owls would keep their wildness going with another walked in rbi. Six base on balls in a row, to be exact, before that final Hawk out.

By now, Coach Escamilla had to be having CL hitters waiting for a strike before a swing and Tyra would coax an 8 pitch walk for the final run and walk for this long inning.

Canyon Lake would walk off the field with a win and ready for their next game taking a Bus to Hondo as walking there would not be a good idea.

Not a pretty win but walking is always better than crawling.

Go, Way to Walk, Hawks!!
