Single Helps get a Grand Slam Hawk Win over Boerne, 13-12

CL Hawks get a walk off single from Kaitlyn Cox in a firework’s show and win over Boerne, 13-12.

“I was proud on how we overcame some adversity,” Head Coach John Gallagher stated. “We knew that they (Boerne) were not going to lie down….but I had confidence in our offense going into the 7th inning.”
The Boerne Greyhounds started the game with a lead and would reclaim that lead in their last inning, putting a scare on the Lady Hawks, that are still on a path to win District 28-4A.
Boerne scored first to start the game and that lead was quickly erased when Kenzie Sayles tripled over right fielder Turnbill to get things going for Canyon Lake. Bailey Bryan singled Sayles in, tying the score.
“It feels exciting when you feel you have accomplished things in going further than you think you could,” Sayles said in response on having a chance to swing away in driving the ball for a triple. “We are going to continue to do as good as we can and be as good, as we can be, and try our best.”
Bryan ended with 5 rbi’s in this contest and now owns the record for most runs batted in (rbi) for a season with 37, passing Brianna Young’s 34 rbi’s four years ago.
Maddy Puente had a two out single giving Adriana Peaslee two players in scoring position when she had a line drive single to the center field and a Hawk, 3-1 lead after one inning.
The Hawks struck again with a 4 run 3rd inning that started off with a Maddy Puente double. Peaslee had her 3rd run batted in with her second single. Kay Puente kept the rally going with a one out single putting runners on 1st & 2nd base.
Don’t Even Try to Steal around Catcher Kay Puente
Kay Puente had been struggling at the plate since district had started and seeing this Freshman Catcher start to produce from the plate will have an opportunity for keeping rallies going. Puente has had a superb season as catcher this year and came through during this game when she caught a Greyhound trying to steal 2nd base.
“That makes you feel accomplished,” Kay Puente stated. “I heard their head coach say to the hitter to look where the catcher is setting up and I knew I had her when she tried to steal….I just felt it!”
On getting her hitting back in a groove, Puente said succinctly, “I have been working on my inside and adjusting at the plate to make it to the outside pitches.”
Angie Rodriguez was up next and worked a walk loading the bases for a 2 run single off the bat of Adriana Zunker. Marley Carrizales continued this frame with her first hit of the game scoring Rodriguez and a Hawks, 7-1 lead.
Boerne would not go away easy when they scored 3 runs for their 4th inning rally. What would be one of many outs in this contest, was during that setting which could have been a huge out after Carrizales took a ground ball and went to home plate to Kay Puente for a tag out.

Bryan would continue her home run barrage and this time with the bases loaded giving CL 4 more runs and what would seem to be a safe, 11-4 lead going into the last two innings.
“I went to the plate just trying to get a hit,” Bryan remembered when asked about her home-run. “I had been trying to hit a home run on my earlier at bats and I needed to get back to just getting a hit and my home run was hit better than I expected.”
A 5 game hitting streak is an accomplishment for most softball players, but upping the the ante to a 5 home-run hitting streak is out of this world.
The Greyhounds scored twice to cut CL’s lead to 5 runs and still a safe lead heading into the final inning.
Boerne’s Saucedo connected on a two run homer cutting the Hawk lead to 3 runs and still one out to start the 7th inning. A single and two walks would load the bases for the Greyhounds when Maddy Puente would coax the second out on a shallow fly ball to Sayles in left field.
But another walk would score the 9th run and now the winning run on first base. Coach Gallagher would go back to Banks to try and close out this game.

A Walker double to right-center field would clear the bases and have Boerne with a lead they started the game with and a, 12-11 advantage.
Canyon Lake had been in situations like this and now found themselves in a precarious situation needing 2 runs for a win to stay in first place all alone.
A full count walk to Bryan would give the Hawks their tying run on first with no outs. Maddy Puente would single next up and giving CL two on and the winning run on first. A double steal during Peaslee’s, at bat, would put the winning run at 2nd base with one out. An infield hit plated Bryan for the tying run with still just one out for the Hawks.
Kay Puente would be issued an intentional walk to give any base as an out for the Greyhound defense. Rodriguez would be the next Hawk batter until Coach Gallagher made a decision to have Kaitlyn Cox come in as a pinch hitter.
Cox had not had an rbi up to this point of the season and had not played consistently since before the district schedule kicked into gear.
That decision paid off when Cox would smack the ball into the left field corner that would score the winning run and a game that took over 2 hours to complete.

On what Coach Gallagher’s thinking was in calling on Cox for this situation, “She (Cox) had been hitting the ball real well this week and Angie’s (Rodriguez) swing is longer and I wanted someone that had a more compact swing.”
A very astute observation as this call was just what CL needed to realize this victory.
Cox was all smiles coming off of the field, “I had been practicing and working on dropping my hands in practice…I had been working on getting my swing.” On what her thought process was when Coach anointed that she would be the hitter, “I had talked with my teammates and they said she (the pitcher) had been pitching inside and they just gave me a heads up….I knew she was bringing it in and I just took my bat to get the ball off.”
That single would have been scored a double, if CL had needed more than one run for the win. But now that Single made a Grand Slam Win for the Hawks.
“We are really pushing to be better,” Peaslee observed. “We want to just keep on winning and keeping our winning streak going so we can get to the playoffs and win district.”

The Hawks will go to Hondo this Friday for their next game and I am sure CL will not take any team lightly as Boerne would put a scare into plans that still has the Hawks holding down first place.
Fredericksburg lost to SA Antonian and Bandera beat Hondo to keep their chances of finishing in the top 3 at their forefront.
