Softball: No Rain but Plenty of Hail, in Hawk Win over Bandera, 13-9

A storm without the rain, just missed the Hawk Nest during Canyon Lake’s game with Bandera but there were some sightings of Softball Size Hail pounding just outside the outfield fence which would spur CL to a, 13-9 win over the Bulldogs.
“We needed some easy outs because our pitchers were struggling,” Head Coach John Gallagher stated. “But I was confident with our offense as we are 7 or 8 deep in hitting and their confidence showed up tonight.”

That confidence had the Hawks with 3 home runs in one game while accomplishing this feat with 3 different players powering the ball over an outfield fence. Earlier this year, Bailey Bryan had two home-runs and Angie Rodriguez joined that feat with a solo shot that had 3 homers in their San Antonio Christian contest.
Bryan was one of those 3 players on this night, as this Young Lady has homered in her last 4 games and added two doubles to that tally for a 5 rbi contest. Nothing new for a player that is proving how hard work in the batting cages can translate to good at bats, which for Bryan is an understatement.
Adriana Peaslee and Maggie Banks were the other two Hawks that participated in this Hail Storm with Peaslee getting her first ever home-run and Banks cashing in with her first homer since her Freshman year. (not at CL)
“I felt it off the bat,” Peaslee said in response if she knew her hit would go over the fence. “I had the proper load and it just flew off the bat….I did not know how to run after rounding first base….should I go fast or slow, but I just decided to keep the pace.”
There was only one inning, for the Hawks, that had a goose egg for a number reading on the scoreboard and it would be their 5th frame.

CL did not mess around starting this game building a, 10-1 lead going into the top of that 5th inning. That was when the Bulldogs woke up and scored 8 runs during their last 3 innings producing a scare for these front running Hawks.
A momentum changer for sure, but one more homer off the bat of Banks would help CL’s effort scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, for just enough separation and an eventual 4 run win.
Three Hawks would accumulate 3 hits with lead off hitter, Marley Carrizales setting the table, all night long for that Hail parade that knocked her in for 3 of those runs.
Very seldom will a High School Softball game have the same amount of runs-batted-in as runs scored in a contest. This was one of those battles for both teams.
All of the 3 Homer-Girls ended with multiple rbi’s with Bryan’s 5, Adriana Peaslee’s 4, and Banks’ with 3 that would have 12 of those 13 runs scored.
“We were really relaxed at the plate,” Banks deposited. “But we could have been more focused.”

Maddy Puente had that final rbi with a double down the line scoring Bryan. CL’s slugging percentage was an all-time best for a game finishing with an, .806 average, as this storm was minus the rainfall and luckily a complete game that was never delayed.
“I was thinking about hitting a gapper,” Maddy Puente said in response for getting her double. “We knew this game was about to eat it up and win!!” Puente and the Hawks had a lot on their plate to eat in this contest.
Canyon Lake was poised to lap the Bulldogs and go home early but Bandera would not quit their fight coming up on their half of the 5th inning scoring 5 runs and seeping back into this battle. A win would have tied the District 28-4A race with 3 teams if these ‘Dogs could have pulled that off.
A walk started off that 5-run affair and then these Bulldogs would provide some of their own power pounding 2 triples and a double totaling 6 hits during that 5th inning barrage.
Maddy Puente would relieve Banks with still no outs and 5 runs across the plate. Puente gave up a double and walk but no more damage and CL lead would be reduced to four, 10-6.
With a vicarious lead, Canyon Lake would go to work in their 6th inning with two doubles off the bat of Bryan and Maddy Puente and then Banks making her deposit on a line drive shot over the left-field power alley, scoring 2 more runs and a, 13-6 lead for the Hawks.
Go Hawks!!
Bandera has a young team and no one told them this game was finished as they had one more rally with their bats. A one pitch ground out started the final stanza and then an 8 pitch walk started the Bulldogs one last chance to win or tie this game.
A single and double would produce two more runs off the bat of starting pitcher, Penelope Garcia and she would score on another double by Mattie Morrison for Bandera’s last run.
This battle would produce 22 runs and 25 hits that had 12 go for extra bases. A literal Hail Storm with out the rain.
On what is different about this team, Peaslee would state, “We are working together and no one hesitates to say that we have their back. We keep picking each other up and this game we know that we needed to get our momentum back.”
That they did!!
Now, Canyon Lake will be off for this Friday and then welcome Boerne to the Hawk Nest next Tuesday as the 2nd round of District play starts for CL.
