CL Hawk Freshman Miss Win by 2 Seconds to Marble Falls, 30-26

Coach Greene instructing for better results next week!

Canyon Lake’s Freshman Football team started their first game on the High School level with a loss after Marble Falls took this game with 2 seconds left on the clock for the victory, 26-30.

Up until that time, this Freshman Hawk team had survived a mistake ridden contest with a chance to come away with a hard fought win.

   Let’s Go Hawks!!

“That first half was slow,” Head Freshman Coach Bill Greene started. “They let the stage get too bright, but we played the brand of football we like in that second half….we just ran out of time.”

“I’m proud of them and we will get better next week,” Coach Greene said eloquently.

Canyon Lake started with a cannon when James Bates took the kick-off 78 yards to paydirt after breaking out of a host of purple shirts on the 49 yard line to a wide open field and touchdown.

“Coach told me to run up the middle and we came ready to play,” Bates remembered. “I kept running hard and I was seeing the holes.”

Bates was not only commenting on his return but an overall game after averaging a little over 10 yards per carry in the game.

This young man was not finished as Bates uncorked another 35 yard kick-off return and totaled 195 all purpose yards against a decent Mustang club.

The Lake held Marble Falls on their next possession and that resulted in the Mustangs only punt of the contest.

A Hawk lost fumble on their next drive, opened the door, for a 3 play drive and score for the home team and a lost lead, 6-7.

James Bates after a break out game against Marble Falls

CL would drive the field for 67 yards on a, vintage slot-t, 12 play march and score from 10 yards out with Bates helping taking the lead back, 12-7.

Canyon Lake held the Mustangs and then another Hawk fumble allowed just enough time for a MF score leaving no time on the 2nd quarter clock, CL would take a 3 point deficit into the locker room, 12-15.

MF would have the same ending, as this Mustang team increased their lead after QB Becker for the Mustangs darted through the line unscathed and 57 yards later crossed the goal line, 12-22.

CL Freshman rallied, scoring the next two times with the ball with Dominick Vaillant scoring from 9 yards out followed by QB Jeremy Greene on a keeper for 16 yards and a Hawk, 26-22 lead, with the game still in the 3rd quarter.

MF Freshman took their next drive to the Hawk 12 yard line when Kolten Ramey stopped a fourth down conversion attempt with no gain and a CL chance to seal the deal.

A slot-t offense with the ball in the 4th quarter has a high success rate of taking valuable time off the clock while sealing a winnable contest. MF’s defense would arise to the occasion and CL’s first punt of the game was the result of three plays totaling 5 yards, forcing a punt.

Says Go Hawks

                 Let’s Go Hawks!!

Marble Falls would start their possession on CL’s 44 yard line with 3:30 left on the clock. A 4th down conversion on the first set of plays by QB Becker helped keep what would be a winning drive alive.

With 8 seconds left on the clock, Vasquez would bull over from the 3 yard line with a whole host of purple jerseys getting in on the TD pushing their runner over the goal line.

A tough loss but that will result in some learning moments and better results for the future.

Next week can not get here soon enough as what will soon become a road warrior team with the Freshman’s first home contest coming October 25th, but this time next week CL will be at Pfluggerville Weiss for their next battle starting at 5pm.

Go Hawks!!
