CL Hawks Hold there Own in Cuero Scrimmage

Canyon Lake starts Cuero Scrimmage with a good defensive effort!

Canyon Lake’s first scrimmage is in the books after battling the Cuero Gobblers last Saturday.

Not many clouds for cover when the two teams took to the field on a 100 degree start to this battle.

Another Year with the Best Plumber in Canyon Lake!!

CL’s Freshman had a decent time on the field and held their own after a banner 8th Grade season and a district championship.

Your basic good and bad moments on the field that will give the Coaches plenty to work on before another Scrimmage this Thursday against Orange Grove.

The Hawk Junior Varsity looked much like the Freshman while they were in the heat of their battle and this JV crew will be working on taking care of some issues with turnovers and working out those and more kinks.

Another 3 days of preparation and a chance to see if this group of players can step up their game as the Marble Falls’ game is less than two weeks away.

Cuero will go down as one of the toughest pre-season scrimmages for The Hawk Nation and this year’s Varsity held their own and came away with some good plays on both sides of the ball with a night that finished with only a few bump and bruises.

“I am proud on how well we played,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “It reminded me of last year’s game with Giddings when we started the game sluggish and then came back in the second half.”

            Way to Go Hawks!!

That would be a good capsule of how this night progressed, as Canyon Lake seemed to hit their stride, the longer this scrimmage went.

“We fought back and responded mentally and this was a great first scrimmage,” Coach Drum continued. “Our players responded to the adversity and on how fast the game moved.”

Coach Drum was responding to those new players that made the jump from their JV roles this past season.

Canyon Lake graduated one of their largest classes this past season which resulted in giving many of theses Hawk players another year on a sub-varsity team. That scenario would have seen a lot of those students on the Varsity last year but instead taking snaps on the JV squad.

On what will be on the docket before their next battle? “We had some missed assignments but it was mainly little things which we can work on for next week…..this team did show some mental toughness.”

There was no score in the scrimmage but taking this game as face value, Canyon Lake scored two times while keeping the Gobblers out of their end zone for a scrimmage that went right at 2 hours of work.

Canyon Lake Sports will be Broadcasting in their 3rd Year.

Cuero was missing their coveted receiver but Canyon Lake can counter with a one of their best running backs not in pads for this scrimmage.

Take aways are simple, if you have a CL decal, then you left this long day with a smile on your face after facing a Top 10 caliber team and holding their own.

Canyon Lake will be back on the road in Cuero this Thursday with the first snap commencing at 5pm when Orange Grove meets your Hawks halfway for their second and final scrimmage before the season opens at home with Marble Falls on Friday, August 31st.

Go Hawks!!
