CL Hawks Clean Back Bone in Win over Texans, 33-14

Canyon Lake brought the Back-Bone Trophy back home after disposing Wimberley, 33-14 as the Hawks won their first road contest against our neighbors to the north and start the season 3-0.
At the 6:44 mark of the 2nd quarter, Canyon Lake had totaled 12 yards of offense as Wimberley’s defense was in the Hawk’s huddle and this contest was starting to get long in the tooth.
Go Hawks bring that Back-Bone Trophy to my place I might have a way of straightening that out!!
Then the longest play in CL’s history broke the ice, a 93 yard pass play to Chance Martelli from QB Peyton McMullen. This would start a night for 461 yards of offense and the Back Bone Trophy being transported back to the good guys side of that crooked road, 33-14.
The tale of the tape started with 12 plays/12 yards and finished with 31 plays/461 yards giving Canyon Lake a 15 yards per play and victory.
“In both halves of this game we were trading punches and we just tired them out,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “This was a great win with all the adversity and our defense did a great job and a great non-district game….this was a team effort.”
That Hawk offense had another weapon in Jacob Ruff reaching the 200 yard barrier on explosive plays and finishing with 222 for this game. Each Ruff score was an explosive play as all three snaps added up to 82 yards of real estate.

“The slot-t wears people down,” Ruff barked. “But we played all 4 quarters and I just took it all in stride.”
Those strides added up as Ruff now joins, Zach Henshaw, Josh DeVries, Austin Brennan and Tanner Faris in that exclusive 200 yard club.

Wimberley opened this game driving to the Hawk 13 yard line but missed on their 30 yard field goal try. This Texan drive was halted on a great defensive play after CL tackled a Texan rusher for an 8 yard loss on a 1st down play deep in the red zone of the Hawks.
This CL defense continues it strong hold to start this season led by Linebacker Greyson Lee who finished this night with 15 tackles.
The Texans would cash in on their next possession 63 yards and scored at the end of that first stanza.
Canyon Lake would have their second 3 plays and punt series before forcing a fumble, but CL would still struggle in their running game covering 6 yards after turning the ball over on a 4th down incompletion.
WHS would pin CL down on their 7 yard line after a booming 46 yard punt and Canyon Lake still running in mud on this synthetic turf up to this part of the battle.
Another run for no gain on first down set up, The Play, which would punish Wimberley with a pass play to a wide open Martelli who caught the ball at the 45 yard line and then transforming into his track season mode with a 400 meter run to the end zone, 6-7.

“I’m not the first option on that pass play,” Martelli said. “And after the catch I just don’t have any memory until I reached the end zone….all I knew, was that no one was going to catch me.”
“Before this game I remembered how I had dominated on their track and I just tried to transfer that energy to football,” Martelli finished.
Another good defensive stop on Wimberley’s next possession would put CL in motion again. This game had the Texan defense bringing a lot of players into the box and a Hawk incompletion pass on a first down snap would open up that slot-t offense as those explosive runs would be aplenty till that final play of the contest.
This Hawk drive would finish with running plays for, 11-9-8-11-21 yards and a score and lead that would not be relinquished again, 13-7.
A second half CL offensive start of 68 yards on just 3 plays would give an indication that this would be a different ending for Wimberley than so many other contests in this rivalry.
Ruff started with a 42 yard run and ended on Almond’s 30 yards to paydirt.
Way to Plug those Leaks, Go Hawks!!
With the score still in the, anybodies game, Canyon Lake would put the distance needed for an eventual win when CL traveled 95 yards with a 55 and 22 yard bursts from Ruff and a Hawk lead, 26-14.
Another Ruff burst for the final score and win from 39 yards out and a Back-Bone Trophy for the next year residing in CLHS Halls of learning.
Canyon Lake continues to improve and Sophomore QB McMullen will be a key piece in keeping this game on track as District 14-4A Division I play looms in a month.
On Peyton’s thoughts on this contest, “We noticed a lot of shifts at the line and we adjusted and that was a very good decision,” McMullen said. “We wanted to carry our momentum from the first half to the second half.”
That was accomplished to the nth degree and how is this Sophomore QB thinking after 3 games of varsity play? “It is all coming to me!”
Good news as next week will have the Smithville Tigers (2-1) coming to the Hawk Nest to face a CL team that is tied with that 2011 team with a 3-0 record to start the season.
