Canyon Lake Finally Beats Freddie, 3-1

CL Hawks were all smiles after Win over Freddie.

Canyon Lake started their match with Fredericksburg the way they ended against Wimberley—Terrible. Working to get enough points to make it to double digits.

Then an awakening and a Hawk turnaround by sweeping their next 3 sets for a win and a 2nd place in District 28-4A race tied with Boerne. This Friday will end the first round of district play with Bandera at home.

The Lake started their first set with 6 unforced errors on Fredericksburg first serve and looking at a 12-2 deficit and to put it politely, an uphill battle that was never in doubt for the Billies, 25-10.

Canyon Lake did hit double figures on their last serve but that was the extent of their good play.

“I will not accept a loss if they are not fighting,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “We busted our butt in practice and we worked on some things….(Coach was mentioning the Wimberley game)….I told the girls that we (Coaches) had done everything we could do and that it was not on me and they needed to take ownership and get the job done.”

The Good News is that each game is a best of five and Canyon Lake started paying their taxes so they could start taking ownership during their next set.

Another part of this game had the Hawk Fans moving enough after that first set blow-out since the spot where they were sitting would have to change.

North Shore UMC says Go Hawks!

Fredericksburg started that next set much like CL just had stunk it up and after a 3-4 score would have Paige Bower serving a 4 point Hawk rally and a lead that would continue to increase with a win, 25-11. There were only 5 unforced errors and CL had 6 different players with a kill.

Caroline Kullberg and Bower led that brigade with 3 each for a pay-back and now an all even game again.

Canyon Lake would continue starting with another 4 point rally, this time from Haley Overstreet doing the serving and kills from Kullberg and Megan Vorhis.

The Hawks have not been very successful in past battles against the Billies and the game count has been deafening, 1 win and 15 tries going into this Tuesday night contest.

CL last win over Freddie was during the 2015 season,  this had CL’s only two year period, that Freddie was not in the same district. So it was just a one game affair at this same venue.

Paige Bower and Kayla Wunderlich teamed up for 5 blocks and 15 kills in victory over the Billies

That 2015 season is still the best group of ladies record wise with several of those players being Seniors and that had set the stage for the first District Championship for Canyon Lake in any sport.

The Hawks would take a couple of 4 point leads in that 3rd set but FHS staged comebacks and had the set all tied up at 19 points.

Freddie would strike first with a 2 point serve and taking a 21-19 lead but CL would score the next 6 points to go up 2-1 and put more pressure on the home team.

On Overstreets’ serves, The Lake, scored 18 points and in that 3rd set, there were 9 points by serve realized during that part of the rotation after leading the team with 3 aces in this match.

“We did not want to go to 5 sets.” Paige Bower said. “We just wanted to win…after that first set, everyone reflected and we decided that we Have to want it.”

Bower finished with 9 kills and ended that final set with 2 blocks to seal the deal. “I like to go into games, calm and relaxed, I don’t want to overthink it (the game)….. I want to be calm but fired up and I think we were a little too calm to start tonight.”

On those last two blocks, “It really helps when you get help from the outside and I got great help tonight… without those players then getting a block would be a lot harder.”

Kayla Wunderlich was very instrumental in this win, leading with 2 blocks and 5 kills. “We needed to get our intensity up after that gut wrenching first set,” Wunderlich said without any wonder. “We needed to fight for what we wanted.”

On what was going through her mind during those key blocks, “I just saw the ball and said, I was going to get the block and I did!”

               Way to Go Hawks!!

Wunderlich had all 3 of her blocks during the last point scenario of each set three. Two blocks helped in that final set.

That last set would add another block from Megan Vorhis which totaled 5 team blocks for that final, 25-19 win and confidence builder.

Riley Mickey led Canyon Lake with 13 kills and was called upon with 8 of those kills coming during those last two sets as this team came together to finish and give the Canyon Lake momentum going into this Friday’s clash with the Bandera Bulldogs.

Congrats and Go Hawks!!
