CL Hawk Freshman Feast on Ducks in Win, 27-12
Canyon Lake’s Freshman had just enough in taking care of Taylor winning, 27-12 in another road game for the road warriors.
This Freshman club has not played with home cooking yet this season and will be the away team next week when they travel to Burnet.
“The tougher team won and we handled adversity and we decided after halftime that we just had to be tougher,” Coach Almanza stated. “Because of our size we were able to wrap them up and drive them back.”
The Hawks scored on their first two possessions 99 yards for those two touchdowns.
On that first drive, Canyon Lake, only had one play that the Chain Gang had it marked for a 2nd down. That snap resulted with a 5 yard run by James Bates on his way for a 191 yard afternoon.
This drive was also highlighted with two carries each by Dominick Vaillant (22 yards) and Braden Maxon (17 yards) that set up that 5 yard score.
CL converted one 4th down before a 39 yard Bates run setting the Hawks up on Taylor’s 4 yard line and a Bates score with the next snap.
The Lake had a 14 point lead and a team effort with a defense that gave up just 13 yards for the Duck’s two drives resulting in punts.
The Hawks had their opening 2nd Half drive thwarted with a lost fumble and then CL would get an interception by Brock Cobrun that stopped a promising drive for Taylor. Cobrun did run that int back 43 yards helping reverse the field to the Duck’s 29 yard line.
Canyon Lake would take 3 plays to increase their lead, 20-6 after a 35 yard Bates run and score on the Hawks next play.
“I was looking at the QB’s eyes as we had zone coverage and I just came off the ball for the catch,” CobRUN said. “I thought I could make it (touchdown) but they came after me and had the angle….so, I just did not want to fumble.”
The Hawks were controlling the trenches which was a testament to CL’s 8 yards per carry against the Ducks.
“I was just blocking the guy in front of me,” Ashton Montgomery said matter of factly. “Driving them and using my feet in the opposite direction.”
On what his thoughts are when one of those running backs goes past one of Montgomery’s blocks, “Whenever they are passing me then I just think they are going to score a touchdown.”
That is what makes this a team game, as the lineman are many times unsung heroes, but a simple truth is that those running backs need those lineman to spring an opening so they can grab those headlines.
Bates scored all of CL’s touchdowns and was a simple read, “We are going, 5-0 in district.”
Go Hawks!!
