Canyon Lake took the Bone from the Bulldog after a convincing, 43-0 win as the Hawks continue their unbeaten season (7-0).

            Way to Go Hawks!!

“We did what we needed to do,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated matter of factly. On how this had some good things happen in all 3 phases (offense/defense/special teams), Coach Drum continued, “We are getting close, but we will have to be ready for the next three weeks….this will be our toughest stretch of this season.”

The Hawks sputtered with their opening drive but CL’s defense would be up to the task on this rainy night after holding Burnet to 91 yards of total offense.

The Lake’s defense put the Bulldogs in a punting formation for a record 8 times which is a feat not reached in the last 119 games played by Canyon Lake.

This was the 5th shut-out all-time and seeing Canyon Lake keeping 3 teams without a touchdown in their first 7 games during this campaign will attest to how well the Hawks are doing in this department.

“We executed,” Defensive Coordinator Brian Hooper started. “They were an explosive team and I am proud of these guys….We have some things to clean up but our secondary played well.”

Inclement weather might have helped and Coach Hooper chipped in, “That might have had something to do with it, but we did a good job of making them one-dimensional and I tell them to make their offense play left handed.”

   Let’s Go Hawks!!

That was certainly the case as these Dawgs were at least a one pawed canine for most of this night.

Burnet had garnered 77 yards during the first half and then CL got stingy and held the visitors to 14 yards in the 2nd half to complete this whitewash and 2nd win to start District 28-4A play.

Canyon Lake has held 5 opponents to less than 100 yards of total offense and two of those gems have come this season.

                    Burnet 91 2018

On CL’s second possession, the runs were concentrated between two players, Jacob Ruff and Tristan Chacon who would share the carries on this 68 yard drive having both Hawk’s with 5 carries a piece and a Chacon 7 yard run up the middle for what would be the only score needed, 7-0 on this night.

Way to Plug Leaks, Go Hawks!!

The Bulldogs had their best drive with the ball next, by moving 43 yards, to The Lake’s 19 yard line and then a tackle behind the line of scrimmage added by a 15 yard penalty put Burnet needing 27 yards to continue their drive.

One of those 8 Dawg punts had Canyon Lake starting their next drive 99 yards from the goal line.

Two first downs on the drive and then a 3rd down needing 9 yards would have CL with their first pass and QB Peyton McMullen throwing a perfect ball to Chance Martelli and a 28 yard first down. This play would be the play needed for a touchdown 9 plays later.

“That extra facet in this game helped in getting this drive down the road,” Coach Drum chimed in.

During that stretch of plays Chacon unleashed a 32 yard run to The Lake’s 4 yard line and a Ruff touchdown two plays later, 14-0. Canyon Lake took up 7 minutes on this set of downs and would relinquish the field for The Defense next.

Burnet had 3 downs and a punt that put Canyon Lake on their 34 yard line with 1:03 left on the first half clock.

McMullen’s next pass was picture perfect again this time to Chacon by reaching out his hands and 30 yards later crossing the goal line and a Hawk, 21-0 lead going into halftime after a Jacob Neel interception stopping the Dawgs once again without anything to hang on their dog-house wall.

“That was us being the best on every play,” Chacon said while recalling those Hawk big plays.

                   Go Hawks!

Another 3 play and punt on a Bulldog drive to start the 2nd half had CL copying that script with a punt of their own.

Burnet ended their next drive in the Foghouse as a JT Greene sack on a trick play had the Dawgs needing 44 yards to keep this set of downs going.

“We played an overall good game,” Greene said with envy. “This was a team win in all phases of our game.”

Enter CL’s special teams and a 39 yard punt and a Trenton Lorett 52 yard punt return and the Hawks were set with a first and needing 9 yards for a score. Four plays and another one yard plunge by Ruff would have the Bulldogs coming from the Fog being down 28 points.

Canyon Lake was not through as this Hawk team would take just 3 plays to cover 87 yards with a nifty run by Ruff going right up the middle for his longest run of 79 yards. This was a bitter sweet touchdown run when Ruff was injured on this play.

That 79 yard run tied Zach Henshaw for 8th in the longest Touchdowns Club.

Burnet would end this game with -9 yards in that last quarter on 14 plays as Canyon Lake’s defense made sure these Dawgs would not get out of their back-yard and if they did then they would be going left and in circles.

             Way to Go Hawks!!

“We just brought the energy and intensity,” Defensive Tackle Shawn Pendleton said in responding on how the defense controlled this outcome. “We were going to keep it going through every play and if they had a good play then it did not matter because if we gave up one play, then would have 3 good plays.”

Simple math put to use as outnumbering a teams good plays will result in a defensive masterpiece on most nights.

“We will bring that same energy and keep playing like we did tonight,” Pendleton said in response on how this team will continue their last three contests. “We have a Big Board and we are going to fill it up and reach all of our goals.”

This was in reference to CL’s Board that shows the goals met or not met in categories for each battle.

Lorett would score on a 4 yarder and final Hawk score, 43-0.

The Hawk’s will be hoping for a good result on tests on Senior Jacob Ruff as this team has a good team bonding.

“We are close,” Chacon said bout his running mate. “We are like brothers and we have been playing together for a long time….every game is the most important and we know we will play our best on every play.”

      Pounce on them Hawks!!

“We will keep playing for each other,” Greene said in thinking bout Ruff. “He is a good player and we play for him since we are family.”

Canyon Lake will be back in action on the road next Friday when they travel to Fredericksburg and a chance to check out the Billies who lost to Taylor 36-14.

CL has now won 15 of their last 16 contests and continues to be a threat heading through district play.

Go Hawks!!
