Track Season started early in Canyon Lake’s Freshman game with Fredericksburg after a tough loss, 44-36.

This was the first home game this year for the Freshman crew and the fans would need to fasten their seat belts as this game started in hypo speed.

                      Go Hawks!

It took Fredericksburg 4 plays to get things going after speeding down he field in 4 plays and scoring on a 34 yard catch and run by Judson Beard.

The Hawks were not deterred when James Bates bolted for 68 yards to the Billies 22 yard line and then a 22 yard run by Dominick Vaillant one play later, 8-8. And the first half was just getting started with more drag racing on those ensuing possessions.

But a stroke of luck when Freddie fumbled on their next time with the ball on a vicious hit by Kolten Ramey that would dislodge the ball and having CL setting up shop just 32 yards from another score.

This took another 3 plays and Vaillant was doing the damage, this time, scoring on a 20 yard pitch and run play, 16-8.

Fredericksburg would tie the score next when QB Cole Immel finished the drive with a 4 yard run that hit pay-dirt on the 3rd play of the 2nd quarter, 16-16.

Canyon Lake would respond with an oneupmanship and Bates one play 61 yard run right up the middle and score with just 39 seconds coming off the clock, 22-16. That missed extra point would be a factor in this game as the Billies were playing a pretty salty offensive contest.

It was another 10 play drive reminiscent from their last time with the ball with Immel scoring again from 4 yards quarterback run, 22-24.

The ride was getting bumpy at this point of the game as their was still 3 minutes remaining and Mr. Bates would headline the next play going with another explosive play running back the kick-off 82 yards and retaking the lead, 30-24.

Canyon Lake had taken 7 snaps while scoring 31 points during this span of time. The Stewards had been checking seat-belts being fastened several times during this game.

Fredericksburg would score again before halftime with just 57 seconds and a one point lead, 31-30.

Bates had 165 yards rushing and an 82 kick-off return account for 247 all-purpose yardage in those first two quarters.

Canyon Lake was on their way for another score to start the 2nd half until a mid-air fumble stopped the drive and giving the Billies another chance to score. That would take 2 plays and a 38 yard run by Beard and a, 30-38 Hawk deficit.

This game had turned from a sprint to a mile run but Freddie was not finished when scoring to start the 4th quarter and 44-30 lead.

Canyon Lake would need to get going again and Bates would take off with his 2nd kick-off return and this time for a 90 yard return and Hawk score making the game still wishing reach, 36-44.

“I was motivated and wanted to help hype the team, especially after my fumble,” Bates said.

              Way to Go Hawks!!

That last touchdown run had Bates receiving the kick-off on the 8 yard line near the sideline, leaving little room for a chance of a return, “I was just following my blocks and saw Christian Ramirez get his block and then I just saw the hole ad went for it.”

Bates would end this contest with a an impressive 362 all-purpose yards and a Hawk first with 2 kick-off returns in the same game.

That would not happen with both schools leaving the field as tired hombres in this exciting track meet and Fredericksburg win.

This was the first District 14-4A Division I loss for the Freshman team as they will be on the Road (imagine that) next week when they travel to Lampasas and a battle with the Badgers.

Go Hawks!!
