Hawks Awake with Vengeance in Win Over Taylor, 37-20

Way to Plug Leaks, Go Hawks!!
“This was a district heavy weight fight,” Head Coach Charley Drum said like a ring master. “We had an outstanding response after they went ahead two touchdowns and we had a sense of urgency and then we had Caleb (Almond) and (Trenton) Lorett help turn the momentum.”
That was certainly the case in spades when Caleb Almond jump started the Slot -T offense for an impressive 65 yard run that helped wake-up this sleeping Hawk.
Before that Almond run, Canyon Lake was finding it hard to find any easy yardage while seeing their opponent throwing with great accuracy and scoring two touchdowns and a, 13 point lead.
With 177 yards gained by the Ducks before the Hawk’s score, that would indicate a dominant performance up to that break out Almond run. CL had garnered 47 yards during that same sequence and looking up at a 13 point deficit on the scoreboard.
“That play was suppose to go left and I looked to the right and saw space and I just had to go,” Almond said with Joy. “I was in the moment and I knew what to do.”

Caleb broke into the open field and out ran the Ducks by putting more space between him and those Ducks in pursuit during his sprint for the goal line.
“This was amazing and I was loving it,” Caleb continued. “Coach asked me if I was good after the touchdown and I said I was Great!”
That was certainly a game changer but The Lake was still down and had more work to do with 3 quarters to play.
Then entered Lorett, who had been grounded since the 2nd half of CL’s opening game with Marble Falls.
Not a bad night for this Senior itching to get back in the game. This could easily be the most complete game played by one player in CL’s history.
Trenton Lorett’s Trophy Case **Kicking a 35 yard extra point. **Scoring on a 36 yard interception return. **Catching 59 yard pass setting up Canyon Lake on the Duck’s 3 yard line. **How bout a 27 yard field goal. **Rushing for 37 yards on 5 carries. **Finishing with 10 tackles. **A punt return for 27 yds helping CL secure field position for the go ahead touchdown. **Speaking bout punting, a 40.7 yard average on 3 tries is not to shabby. **Taking water from the trainers and replenishing the Officials during the Quarter Breaks. **Taking his SAT test with a perfect score during his half-time break. **Finding a cure for Diabetes.
Not a bad night.
“I had waited 4 1/2 games and the big thing with the Coaches was wanting me to stay within myself and not to go to hard since I was going both ways (Offense/Defense),” Super Man said with resolve. “This was better than I could have expected.”
You think?
“I just wanted to be there for the team and it was good to be back out there,” Lorett said eloquently.
Congrats Hawks!!
Canyon Lake has had leads in those first 3 contest against Taylor that were all lost because these Ducks had an extra dividend of AFLAC and getting back at the Hawks and tearing the heart out in those losses.
“That score (13-0) brought us back to those years where they came back on us and we knew we had plenty of time to get the job done,” Lorett gave his history lesson.
On if Lorett was having fun, “Tons of Fun!! And at the end of the day we play for that player to the left and right of us and all around you.”
On why he did not score on that 59 yard catch and run? “I was so tired and I was just lucky I could get to the ball to catch it.”
Canyon Lake had one of their best passing days with the Slot-T on three throws that were all instrumental in stretching the field and giving Taylor more pressure in stopping CL’s offense.
“When I hear we are calling a pass play, then it becomes a natural for me since I came to Canyon Lake from a spread offense,” QB Peyton McMullen said. “But I have to give credit to the offensive line.”
That wisdom will go a long way for McMullen because this contest did not have any hurry-up plays by the Duck’s defensive front.
Center Nathan De Leon commented on how tough this game became, “I had a dude on the other side of me that was twice my size and had more than 70 pounds on me.”
Hawks Flying High
On Caleb Almond’s 65 yard touchdown run, De Leon continued, “That was suppose to be a trap play and we ended up trapping them further down than we thought and by staying lower we were able to win.”
That offensive line would open holes and protect McMullen which would lead to those big pass plays.
Chance Martelli was able to haul in a 50 yard reception with a perfect throw over his shoulder on a play that would put Canyon Lake in prime position for a score on the Hawk’s opening 2nd Half drive giving The Lake a, 27-13 lead.
“I thought it was a busted play,” Martelli recounted. “As soon as I saw the ball come out, I just did my job to catch the ball.”
Easier said than done as this was an over the shoulder catch on a well defensed play.
“I was just in the moment and I kept my eyes on the ball no matter what,” Martelli said with a smile wider than Canyon Lake.
CL had a little of everything in this win as their next stop will be another home game this coming Friday, when The Lake will welcome Burnet to the Nest.
