Canyon Lake will be hosting their 5th School this season, when the Burnet Bulldogs come out of their dog house for battle on this 2nd leg of District 14-4A Division I play.
The Hawks have not had much success in games played with Burnet as these two opponents were part of the same district when CL started competing for district titles in 2008.
The Lake has one win and it was a sweet victory coming in a Bi-District playoff bout which was the first playoff win in CL’s second post-season play.
This year, Burnet, has struggled and was coming off of a 2 game winning streak before the Lampasas Badgers used their potent offense to win going away last week.
QB So. Jaxson Denton will be calling the signals for the Bulldogs which will be another spread type offense. Denton has a 70% completion rate and averages right at 12 yards per completion.
Denton can make an opponent pay with his rushing with a 4 yard average.
CL’s Peyton McMullen is a Sophomore but is not asked to throw as much which has Burnet’s Denton throwing multiple interceptions.
Canyon Lake’s McMullen had his best game in the passing department in last week’s win over Taylor and if that part of this Slot-T Offense gets fine tuned then the more offensive The Lake will be as this season matures.
Blaine Burkhalter will be Burnet’s go to player through the air with right at 500 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns receiving. Devonte Miller and Luke Kiser are the 2nd and 3rd receiving options with 150 and 200 yards with their catches.
Marcus Escamilla will be the workhorse in the backfield rushing department with 400 yards.
The Lake defense continues to play at a high performance level after holding Taylor to 13 points before a 4th quarter score in the waning moments.
Holding the Ducks to 56 rushing yards and before that last Taylor drive had given up 150 yards passing.
Canyon Lake continues to have some injured players returning and this development had Caleb Almond with his best rushing game with a touchdown run of 65 yards last week.
The Hawks are tied with their 2nd longest winning streak (6) and will look to stay on top in District 14-4A Division I with a win.
Go Hawks!!
