CL Hawks Win 2nd Straight Over Brook Academy, 68-53
Canyon Lake Hawks started this game scoring 26 points in the first quarter helping forge a lead and 15 point win over Brooks Academy in a game played at the Hawk Nest this past Tuesday night, 68-53.
Going into this contest, CL had totaled 31 points in those first 3 games before getting their fast break offense in gear. The Hawks sunk 11 shots on 18 attempts helping with a better start and eventual win.
Trent Mac Roberts was the catalyst in those first 8 minutes scoring 10 points along with 4 other teammates joining in that scoring spree throughout the contest.
“We really have a comfort with each other from our practices and games,” Roberts said in response to CL’s depth. “Our team is very deep and we have the mentality to win every game…during the first part of this game we started slow but were able to open up.”
That was certainly a truism after scoring 26 points but halfway through that first quarter, Canyon Lake had a 4 point lead, 9-5. The Hawks then outscored Brook Academy, 17-4 for a statement and eventual win. That had CL with a 13 point run before BA had their next basket.
“I thought our second unit did a good job scoring points,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said while commenting on this year’s depth. “We have a lot of guys that can play and that allows more kids to use their athletic ability and energy.”
That was certainly the case in those first two opening quarters as The Lake was able to get their largest lead up to 18 points going into their halftime talks.
Two other Hawks joined MacRoberts in double digit scoring with Parker Mott finishing with a team high 18 points and Sam Schimank scoring 10. Mott, who has been prolific from beyond the arc in his first two years, was able to finally get a game with a 3-point success rate of making over 50% on 4 of 7 shots.
MacRoberts’ 8 rebounds was joined by Anthony Zavala who had another solid 4 quarters matching his rebound number with the same amount of points scored.
A break out game for Mott who will be needed with his outside shot which will help bring opponents defense out of zone coverage.
“I started with an air ball but I have to forget about my misses and I finally got into the flow of it,” Mott remembered in his first quarter start. “I’m good at forgetting….if I missed my first 10 shots then I would still shoot again because I have confidence in myself.”
Luckily for CL, Mott was only 0 for 2 before hitting his next 5 shots and two of those happened beyond the 3-point line.
On how deep this year’s team is, “We are running it out and with our transition game we have a lot of shooters and that gives us a choice of taking the shot or kicking the ball out….when we press that gives us more energy and we have to be alert.”
Mott was commenting on the new offense with this year’s group of Hawk players.
Canyon Lake will be off to Marion this Friday and Saturday in a round-robin tourney in hopes this winning streak stays in tact.
