CLJV Basketball Beats Fox Tech JV, 60-55

CL Hawks JV team continue to show the future will be in good hands after beating a good Fox Tech squad, 60-55 last week.

It was a slow start for both schools with both teams separated by one point and totaling 15 points in that first quarter of play.

Canyon Lake had their largest lead of 5 points after when Tuff Cantu sunk a floater on his drive with 3:28 left in this 1st quarter. CL would go silent after that score while losing that lead to the Fox Tech.

Shooting 6% from the field to open the game would put things into perspective in knowing a one point deficit did not look so bad.

That 2nd Stanza, both teams opened it up and and The Lake kept the lead throughout until a last shot with no time on the clock by the Techsters JV for a tied contest, 24-24.

Seven steals and 40% shooting helped CLJV carve a 9 point lead during the 3rd quarter as Patrick McAuliffe scored 10 of CL’s 21 points. McAuliffe finished with a double/double in corralling 12 rebounds to go with his 19 points.

McAuliffe had moved down to Junior Varsity as the football season finished giving extras players taking spots on the Varsity squad.

“This is my first game on JV,” McAuliffe reiterated. “I am trying to develop chemistry and I also had a position change.”

McAuliffe went into the halftime locker room with one point scored before his break-out 18 point second half brigade.

“I had fouls early in the first half and not a lot of possessions,” McAuliffe said in response to his slow start. “I got into a rhythm and changed to playing as a guard which allowed me to produce more from the floor.”

That certainly was an impetus as that move had McAuliffe scoring half of the 2nd half points for Canyon Lake in the win.

A five point win looks closer, but the Hawks had a 10 point advantage with less than a minute left and some good offensive by Fox Tech helped bring that lead down but the game ball still had CL’s name emblazoned on it in this victory.

       Hit-Man says Go Hawks!!

Caleb Shimank and Tyler Pauly led CLJV with 6 steals a piece and Matt Taliaferro joined McAuliffe in double digit rebounds with 10 and leading the Hawks with 4 blocks.

Pearse McCullagh continued his strong play with another solid 15 points after shooting 70% from the charity stripe.

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity will be back in action this Tuesday when Brooks Academy comes to the Hawk Nest with a 5:00pm tipoff.

Way to Go Hawks!!
