CLJV Boys Basketball Score in Win over Blanco, 79-45
CL’s Junior Varsity took off with 20 seconds left in that first quarter for a run-a-way 34 point win, 79-45.
The game had Blanco wielding a 16-10 lead near the end of the first quarter, when a free throw by Kyle Morris and then a Joey Cuellar put back a steal and 3 pointer from Colton Winters at the buzzard had both teams all tied up to start their next quarter.
“I was more mentally into this game,” Cuellar deduced. “I had faith in my shot and with each make it just built my confidence….overall, we have had an attitude shift as our chemistry was there tonight.”
That certainly was the case after Blanco had reached their largest lead of 7 points as the opening quarter was in the latter stages, after a slow Hawk start, 14-7 Blanco.
“We came out flat and then really turned it on….we got the tempo going and got the ball down the court,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman assessed. “Scoring 79 points in a JV game is a bunch, and it was really fun to see….the kids have bought into playing fast and it showed tonight. We had some really good performances from pretty much everyone, so it was a great team win.
The Panthers had their last lead to start the 2nd quarter after making one of two free throws before the onslaught would continue. CL had 6 different scorers in this quarter while outscoring Blanco, 12 points and going into the halftime locker room up, 35-23.
The Lake would then unleash their best scoring ever for a Hawk Junior Varsity with 32 points for the 3rd quarter and increasing the lead another 16 points, 67-39.
Tuff Cantu was sizzling making his first 4 shots with two of those coming from beyond the arc and finished with 12 points for the quarter. Cantu was not afraid of shooting even tho he had missed his first 5 shots in that first half.
“I was really into it and after my last game I was feeling broke,” Cantu said in code. Another great attribute for Cantu is his ability in sinking free throws, “I have a ritual and I look at my feet and then put a spin on the ball.”
Cantu has made 9 of his first 11 charity stripe attempts as his season just gets started.
Morris finished with 9 points during the same stretch adding two 3 pointers of his own that was coupled with 3 free throws. CL made 5 three-pointers in this avalanche.
CLJV had 4 players scoring in double digits with Caleb Schimank missing that mark with 9 points to finish the game.
Cantu (18), Pearse McCullagh (15), Cuellar (10), and Morris (10) were those players in a game that had CL with 23 steals leading to a some easy baskets. Every Hawk but one scored and 16 assists was another stat showing a team win motif.
Canyon Lake will be in action next Monday and Tuesday with that Monday contest at home against Fox Tech.
