CLJV Boy’s Take Brooks Academy’s JV for 3rd Straight Win, 72-52
CLJV won their 3rd game in a row in scoring 72 points in their win over Brooks Academy, 72-52.
Rushing out to a 9 point first quarter lead, the Hawks, continued their play by winning every quarter with relentless pressure in forcing 32 turnovers with 19 steals being converted to a prolific offense around the rim.
Kyle Morris finished the first stanza by sinking all 3 free throws after being fouled on a shot beyond the arc and giving CL their largest lead, 22-13. Morris was also instrumental with a nifty assist to big man Matt Taliaferro with all of that action in those last 12 seconds of the first quarter.
Taliaferro continued his dominance around the basket finishing the game with 10 rebounds and 2, in your face, blocks.
Some new blood with Peyton McMullen making his first appearance to the hardwood after just one practice that resulted in a decent line-score: 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.
“This is a much different kind of shape,” McMullen started in talking bout the difference between football and basketball shape. “I was a little rusty but I will be able to work out some of the kinks when we practice.”
On McMullen’s thoughts with a more pressing defense, “This pressing defense can lead to turnovers and easy baskets.”
This Hawk JV squad is averaging 66 points to start the season which is the most by any Junior Varsity team in Canyon Lake’s history.
Patrick McAuliffe led the scoring with 15 points and had 8 players scoring 6 or more points as the rock was spread around.
With good guard play, this press will work fine as Tyler Pauly played in his second game and shot 80% from the field while taking in 5 rebounds with 3 steals. A good night on the courts after committing just 2 turnovers in this action packed evening.
“We just need more practice,” Pauly said. “We are starting to play better as a team while we are developing our offense.”
On Pauly’s response with the press and how deep this Junior Varsity group has been to start the season, “It helps in keeping everyone fresh which will help in beating who we play down the court every time.”
That will pay dividends as this year continues, but there is one stat that dwarfs all the other…..Free Throw Percentage on this night was 80% after making 8 of 10 shots. For the year, the Hawks are shooting 61% from the free throw line.
CLJV will be back in action tomorrow (Thursday) competing in the Burnet Tournament along with CL’s Freshman Squad.
Go Hawks!!
