CL Lady Hawks Take Down Stockdale Brahmas, 36-25

Junior Jesse Melendez was focused in win over Stockdale.

Canyon Lake dominated on their offensive boards in helping to take care of Stockdale, 36-25.

“We got any shot that we wanted,” Head Coach Zach Burleson assessed. “We executed really well but we just missed our shots.”

           Go Girl’s Basketball!!

Yes, it was one of those games, Canyon Lake would have lost in previous years, but a tough defense has come in handy when those shots don’t find the basket.

The Lake was off in shooting free throws and 3 pointers but those offensive boards helped gloss over those shortcomings with multiple shots with a chance of one scoring.

Jesse Melendez was the difference maker in this win as this 3 year starter hit her stride scoring 12 points and corralling 8 rebounds leading the Hawks in this methodical victory.

“In our past practices we have been working on our fundamentals,” Melendez said. “We are getting more focused and working on making our shots.”

That was certainly the case in this contest, as Melendez made her presence known in the paint in scoring and getting 5 offensive rebounds.

Melendez was more sure of her shots and defensive efforts in this win, “I am trying to be more selfless and I am getting confidence in myself and so is our team.”

             Way to Go Hawks!!

Melendez will be a key ingredient in how far the Hawks will be able to go this year and having strong play will be essential for the Hawks.

As a team all but one player on CL’s roster had a rebound showing a Hawk Green in the paint throughout this contest.

Stockdale scored from the charity stripe with 2:11 in that opening quarter that had Canyon Lake with a 6 point advantage, 10-4.

The Hawks scored 15 points from their offensive rebounding accenting on how this battle was played out for the good gals!!

Caroline Kullberg rejected 2 shots bring her career totals to 93 in needing 7 more to be one of two players reaching the 100 milestone. The ReSporter has been reporting the record holder, Amber Ramsey, with 99 blocks during her career.

              Way to Go Hawks!!

That number was elevated by 30 more after finding that one year had not been calculated and now has that new bench-mark record being 129 blocks.

Kullberg still has a year in a half to increase that Hawk record that still has a chance of being reached during this campaign. With a single season of 62 blocks last year, Kullberg, looks to be on pace to achieve that lofty mark with each additional court date.

Canyon Lake upped their lead to 15 points during that last 8 minutes of play and another win.

The Hawks (11-4) will be back in action this coming Tuesday on the road in Natalia and then at home before the Christmas break on Friday the 21st when San Marcos Home School comes to the Hawk Nest.

That San Marcos game has been moved up to a 3pm JV start with CL’s Varsity contest to follow.

Go Hawks!!
