Boys Basketball Win Final Game before District 28-4A Play, Beating Comfort, 80-73
The Hawks secured their 3rd straight win after a scoring fest over Comfort to end their non-district schedule, 80-73.
Canyon Lake started out of the gates with some degree of authority in scoring 27 points and 9 point lead in ending that first period of play.
“This was a really good win for us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We needed to get going heading into district and this win gives us some confidence moving forward.”
This same Comfort team took Fredericksburg to the brink before losing to the Billies, in an earlier contest this season.
A Bobcat club that looked similar to CL in using the press, was an added bonus, to give some valuable reps knowing there will be some district teams with that same intent.
“We did a great job attacking their press,” Coach Chapman continued. “We really worked on our press break and advancing the ball quickly up the court.”
The Hawks used those practices in preparation which would result with some steals and breaking the Bobcat press in converting lay-ups.
There were 4 Hawks with double digit numbers with Sam Schimank leading that group with a season high, 22 points after sinking 9 shots on 17 attempts.
Anthony Zavala was in a zone in making 7 of 11 shots ending with 14 to help this Hawks cause.
“I thought Zavala did a great job playing inside on both ends of the floor,” Chapman assessed. “He scored some big buckets down the stretch.”
Ben Rowe had his 2nd straight double digit contest after coming back after a sick leave of 4 games during the Fredericksburg tournament after Christmas.
Parker Mott hit the 10 point barrier and also contributed 4 assists and 3 steals for his stat line in this win.
“Parker also did an outstanding job pushing the ball up the floor and getting us easy and high percentage shots,” Coach Chapman closed. “We had a bunch of great contributions from several guys. It was a really good team win.”
The Lake’s lead was formed during that first period starting with 8 straight points to start the game and then followed by a 12 point spree giving the Hawks a 14 point advantage, 27-13 before a 5 point answer by the Bobcats to end that quarter.
Comfort had a lethal group of players that had a long range shooting escapade throughout this contest in helping the Home Team from loosing touch with the Hawks.
Canyon Lake ended the first half with an 11 point lead only to see that total diminished when Comfort opened the 3rd quarter with an 8 to 3 run helping work CL’s lead back to single digits.
The Hawks were able to keep that 11 point going into the final 8 minutes of what would become a classic battle.
Comfort started another run out of the 4th period chute in opening the first 3 minutes in outscoring CL, 14-4 by the 4:47 mark to play, 71-70 Hawks.
Sam Schimank responded with a 3 pointer soon afterwords but that was matched by Comfort again with 2:30 remaining in this game.
Things were not getting Comfortable for Canyon Lake but after Schimank made two free throws, the Hawk defense would keep the Bobcat’s scored locked at 73 points while Rico Griffin’s easy lay-in after a full court pass from Mott and a short jumper from Zavala and this game would be in the books.
This would be the 2nd game in a row having a Hawk team reaching 20 or more assists and shooting 58% from the field helped to show a team that might be peaking just in time for district play one week away.
The Lake will be off this coming Tuesday as they will be preparing for a Llano visit as District 28-4A starts in earnest at the Hawk Nest on Friday, January 11th.
All-Hands seem to be getting their feet and focus as Canyon Lake will looking to increase their 3 game winning streak.
Go Hawks!!
