CL Hawks Beat Bandera to go, 2-1 in District 28-4A play, 70-53

The Canyon Lake Hawks bounced back from their loss to Fredericksburg with a resounding win over Bandera on the road, 70-53 that completed the first week of District 28-4A play.

“It was a really big road win for us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Playing there is always tough no matter who it is. They had Boerne on the ropes last week. I am really proud that we were able to come out and do what we needed to do.”
After the first 3 district games, Canyon Lake finds themselves with their head above water as they continue their quest for qualifying for the playoffs.
“Right now we are in a great position as we still control our own destiny and have a lot to play for,” Coach Chapman relayed the thoughts on going into this week in finishing up the first round of district battles.
The Hawks started this contest scoring 10 straight points in the first 2 minutes of the game that would have CL never trailing and working that advantage to 24 points into the 4th Quarter of play.
CL was led by Sam Schimank and Parker Mott with both players reaching 19 points while Rico Griffin led the Hawks with 10 rebounds having 6 of those coming on the offensive side of the court. All but one Hawk got into the scoring column as these Bulldogs were put in their kennel.
A night and day difference from that loss to the Billies earlier in the week as Canyon Lake missed their point total in that loss (46) by 5 points going into halftime against Bandera.

The Lake shot 40% from beyond the arc in scoring 24 of their 70 points in this win. CL’s bench had a better night by helping out with this win scoring 20 points.
Bandera reached the free throw line 14 times compared to the Hawks 3 trips which would be the only advantage for these Bulldogs in outscoring CL, 12-4 in that department.
Canyon Lake leads the district in scoring averaging 60 points thus far while giving up 54 points which is also their season average on the defensive side.
Griffin returned to the line-up after missing the Fredericksburg contest. Griffin had his vintage stat-line ending with 10 rebounds with 2 assists and 2 steals. Shooting 50% from the floor will be a must as this two rounded district schedule enters the final two games this week of play.
Boerne and Wimberley will give Canyon Lake an idea of where they might stand in qualifying for their 4th playoff campaign in a row after missing that chance during those first 6 years.

Schimank and Mott might remind some of the ‘Old Timers’ of Christian Pena and Tanner Jones who tore up the hard-wood during their first two years of Hawk basketball. Those two players are still on several All-Time lists with just 1 year of numbers showing from their playing days.
“I would say Sam and Parker are definitely better shooters that those old guys,” Coach Chapman recalled. “(Christian) Pena was a really good scorer and Tanner (Jones) was more of a true, run the team, point guard. It is really tough to compare because their games are much different, but I would put Sam and Parker up there with anyone in our program’s history. When they are on any knocking down shots, they are really tough to guard and contain.”
Canyon Lake will have a tough game on Tuesday on the road in Boerne before returning back to the Hawk Nest next Friday when they take on the Wimberley Texans.
“A big week ahead for us,” Chapman closed. As Boerne will be a good road test that should give a good indication of where the Hawks might be after the District contest’s dust settles.
