Lady Hawks Clamp Down on Llano in Comeback Win, 53-45
Canyon Lake was able to keep pace in their District 28-4A race after winning on the road in Llano, 53-45 last Friday night.
There will be 4 teams chosen at the end of the season for playoff action and with this win, the Hawks, cemented themselves in being one of those 4 schools but still have some work to do.
With 3 games in the books, Canyon Lake and Fredericksburg, find themselves on top of the food chain and will suit up against each other this next Tuesday night.
CL first had to get by a scrappy Llano team after coming out looking at a 5 point deficit in the first period of play, 12-7.
“We started down in a, 9-2 hole,” Head Coach Zach Burleson opened. “We had to adjust a little but clawed back to a 23-23 tie at the half. I told the girls just get it close at the half and we can go from there.”
That is exactly what happened with a 16 point quarter while rendering Llano to 11 points to forge a tie at the halfway point of this game.
CL was not finished, when they opened the 2nd half hitting all the right buttons while clamping down on the defensive side of the court in holding the YellowJackets to 4 points.
“We got up to 11 point lead a couple of times and were able to put the game away at the free throw line while making 7 of 8 at the end,” Coach Burleson said. “Lainee (Moses) stepped up big in the 4th period with her free throws…..Overall it was a good team effort with contributions from everyone.”
Moses had 5 assists to go along with her 11 points and was joined by Caroline Kullberg’s 10 points while she was collecting 5 blocks to go along with her 7 rebounds.
Jesse Melendez was chairman of the Boards in leading the Hawks with 13 as this Junior keeps climbing that Rebound All-Time Record with still 7 games remaining in regulation play.
Melendez needs 32 more boards to make that goal a reality.
Lady Rebound All-Time Top 10 1. Tiffany Tschoepe 579 2. Katy Williams 559 3. Amber Ramsey 558 4. Jessie Melendez 548 5. Reagan Heun 544 6. Chelsea Tschoepe 400 7. Kyndall Drum 377 8. Caroline Kullberg 354 9. Mia Riali 305 10. Alexa Ramos 263
“We shot the ball great, Nearly 50% for the game,” Coach Burleson closed. “And it was needed. That was a tough place to play and we battled plenty of adversity. But credit to the girls for hanging in when we needed to and pulling this one out….it was a major win.”
Canyon Lake will have a high hurdle to clear this Tuesday with a road game to Billie Land where they will meet up with a State Ranked Billie team for sole supremacy on top of District 28-4A.
The Hawks next home game will be this coming Friday when Bandera will bring their offensive minded team to The Nest.
Way to Go Hawks!!
