Lady Hawks Keep Playoff Hope Alive in Win Over Llano, 50-32
Canyon Lake finally got over the hump in stopping their 4 game losing streak after outscoring the Llano YellowJackets, 41-15 in the last 3 periods to overcome an 8 point first quarter deficit in winning, 50-32.
The Yellowjackets were red hot jumping out to an 11-1 lead before Head Coach Zach Burleson called a time-out to calm the players.
“I told them that it is basically 3 shots away from being back in this game,” Coach Burleson stated. “We were taking good shots and just play better and don’t worry about it (the score).”
Soothsayer Coach Burleson was right on as CL would outscore our Visitors, 44-19 from that point on.
Junior Lainee Moses would not let this game get away, “We knew that Llano was not as good and that we would have to win and keep playing. We were more tense in our previous games and started playing to win.”
Marley Carrizales was on top of the heap in scoring 20 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Carrizales was active with 4 assists, getting a block and finishing the contest with 2 steals.
Those 2 steals has this young Lady with the most steals garnered in a year passing Ashley Pfaff’s 96 thefts back during the 2010 season.

“We were not wanting to lose,” Carrizales said matter of factly. “We came out with determination and were more intense.”
On if Carrizales knew she might be on this night, “During the warm-ups, I was missing all of my shots.”
Those misses would indicate that Carrizales would be ready as those missed shots were already out of her system.
They’re a lot of recent and current players on that steal list, as CL’s defense has been a mainstay these past few years.
However, defense was not evident during that first quarter of this game with Llano after a 17 point outburst, but that could attributed to a hot shooting team more than CL’s defense being off kilter.
Chelsea Tschoepe joined Carrizales in the double digit scoring column after a 13 point evening that has her currently sitting with 600 points going into her final 2 games in regulation play.
CL had been hovering over the 20 turnover’s per game during the losing streak and on this night had 12 mistakes in helping with a decent offensive output.
This win was needed to give the Hawks a chance in qualifying for a playoff spot as these games will be mirrored by what Wimberley can do as this season has fans looking to the scoreboard to see which teams will be standing after next Tuesday’s battles.
On what Canyon Lake can take from this win, “We can build on this win and focus on Fredericksburg,” Carrizales finished.
Moses was focused in responding to where CL goes now, “We are going fo focus on Fredericksburg and work on taking their press well and our game with them will prepare us for Bandera.”
With just two games remaining and winning one of these remaining contests will go along way in keeping that playoff streak going strong.
Way to Go Hawks!!
