Hawks Finish 1-0-1 In First Day Action at the CL Tourney

The Hawks used their base hits well in both games as this Hawk team is starting to claim a middle name called Clutch.

This second battle was complimented by a good stint on the mound from Cale Claycomb, who pitched a complete game gem in striking out 10 Patriots while pitching in (pardon the pun) with two doubles on this offensive side for this win.
The Lake jumped out to a quick 2 run lead in the bottom of the opening inning when Mason Lee coaxed a one out walk that was followed by a single for Tyler Pauly.
Some sloppiness defensively for Veterans Memorial helped in scoring those runs as this damage was accomplished with just one single.
Claycomb got out of a jam to start the game in stranding a runner on 3rd base after a double and no harm that was inflicted.
That 2nd inning has some ups and downs after Claycomb hit a batter and had a walk but on the flip side was able to strike out the side as VM would score their first run.
“Tonight was about the last time I pitched and I tried to make adjustments and that gave me a learning experience,” Claycomb said after commenting on his last outing and struggling on the mound.
CL would respond with a 3 spot in the bottom of the frame when Claycomb knocked in a run after his first double. Canyon Lake would benefit from some more defensive woes for their visitors in scoring their second run that was followed by a Pauly sacrifice fly and a, 5-1 Hawk lead.

On the offensive side of this game, Claycomb also commented, “Coach told me that I needed to improve my hitting and so they widened my stance and that made me more balanced on my swing….then I just focused on making my self comfortable and it worked on those doubles.”
The Patriots scored their second and final run in the next inning when Claycomb would lose his strike zone with two consecutive walks but would douse that fire with his 5th strikeout.
From there to the finish line…the game would take just 28 pitches and an additional 5 K’s when Claycomb closed the last inning after opening this 5th inning by a single that had CL’s defense snoozing but another 3 strikeouts to finish this contest would finish this night on a winning side.
Gunnar Walker has short window in Hawk Win over SA Veterans
Since tournaments are timed, the Hawks did have an opportunity for another chance of getting their bats going but when it was announced that Freshman Gunnar Walker would be the first hitter, the umps called the game in not wanting to inflict more pain on the visiting team.
“That kinda sucked because that would have been my first Varsity at bat,” Walker said that a hitman. “But I will look back at this and laugh.”
That first contest had Canyon Lake and St. Paul in a fast paced game in getting 7 innings played inside the time allowed.
CL had a 2-run lead before a 3 run home-run that put the Hawks down, 3-2 in the top of the 5th inning.
Up to that frame, Matt Anderson had everything under control and the first two SP players out before consecutive errors had St. Paul taking advantage with that 3 run homer.
The Hawks did tie it up in the bottom of the 5th when Tanner Sellers was hit by a pitch and a James LaLonde single would score that important run.
The Lake would seem to have everything in control after a 2 run 6th when Williams reached base after a fielding error and throw that could not get this Hawk lead-off speedster. That was followed by a, run and hit, (Commonly called a Hit and Run) double by Mason Lee that followed one out later when Brandon Robinson hit a bomb to the fence for another double and the Hawk’s final run.

Anderson lost his control and walked his first two Patriots, during the final inning, which was his only free passes on this night. Lead off walks will usually score and this would come to fruition after Pauly came in for relief and a double tied the score as time would run out on the Hawks and Patriots.
Ptcher’s Anderson and Claycomb got that bad taste from last week’s debacle, in last week’s Championship loss to Zapata, out of their mouth. As the Hawk pitching staff combined for 18 strikeouts on this night.
The Hawks will be in action on Friday with a game against SA Burbank and then wait and see how the seeding comes int play for Saturday.
