Canyon Lake continued their District 28-4A climb with a two game winning streak to finish their first round of play after a run-a-way win over Bandera at home, 12-2.

Way to be a Hero Hawks!!

The Hawks matched their runs scored in those first 4 district games after notching a run or more in all but one inning in this run-ruled victory. The win also saw CL’s district batting average go up by .40 percentages points as Tyler Pauly (.600) and Brandon Robinson (.375) both matched 3 hits a piece with a team high of 11.

“We are seeing the ball better,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said in commenting on scoring 18 runs in the last two wins. “We will need to do the same thing and make routine plays and get base hits.”

Pretty simple game plan and it certainly worked on this night against these Bulldogs.

Going into that 2nd inning tied, 1-1, the Hawks would get separation scoring 5 runs in the frame that had timely hits and blunders coming from the Bulldog’s fielding. Those two entities teamed up in giving, The Lake, a decent lead. It would be the earliest lead in their district season and the Hawks would continue to add to that advantage.

Tanner Schultz and Matt Anderson started this game by reaching base on errors to start that 2nd inning. Schultz was caught stealing and Ethan Slater was next up with a strikeout. With two outs and Anderson on base would have this inning continuing with a Tanner Sellers single.

Caleb Williams followed suit with another single that had Anderson scoring on Bandera’s 3rd error in this inning on a throw by the Bulldog’s left fielder, Hawks leading, 3-1.

Two hits and 3 errors up to this point then Mason Lee would reach on a (error or hit)…if you guessed error then you would be correct. With two on base, Brandon Robinson singled in Williams that was followed by a Pauly doubled scoring two more Hawks, 6-1.

That final tally had Bandera with 4 errors and CL with 4 hits and the carnage would cease, when Schultz grounded out.

Scoring 3 runs in the 3rd inning would give CL a 7 run lead with two of those scores with two outs.

Canyon Lake would finish this game having 10 of their 12 runs scored with two outs.

Another good pitching outing for Schultz was good to see as freshman Schultz continues with his strong play on the mound with an impressive 1.40 era and issuing only one walk during his first time playing in district games during this first round.

“Throw strikes and let the defense do the work,” Schultz said when asked what he focuses while on the pitching mound. “We work in the bullpen before the game which will tell me how my pitches are going and if I will have to go to the bare minimum.”

Matt Anderson and Tanner Schultz continue to contribute as CL prepares for their 2nd round of district games.

Schultz has several pitches and was giving an idea of how he knows what pitches might work with game-time starts.

CL’s Anderson is a magician when it comes to getting on base….his batting average is not the end all, for this cerebral player. In this win, Anderson reached base on all of his trips to the plate by walk, hit , or reaching on an opponents error.

This can be another bonus for the Hawks as Anderson has the 3rd highest batting average (.364) during these district games. His on base percentage (OBP) has reached .500 during that same span.

Anderson responded when asked bout CL’s next game against Boerne a team that lost to Bandera during the first round, “That just shows that in baseball anything can happen…we will need to come out on Friday to play and stay focused.”

With winning the last two contests, Anderson closed, “This let’s our confidence go up and then we can have fun and play more loosely.”

“We can’t rely on the other team to help you,” Coach Escamilla said when asked on how this group will prepare for their next outing with Boerne. “We will have two days of practice and that will give the players a chance to change my mind on who I will play on Friday….the good news was getting better in ending our first round and now we will have 3 home games to finish our district season.”

The Hawks finished with a 4th place finish and will look to improve their seeding the second time around the league.
