CL Hawks Run Out of Outs in Billie Loss, 9-8
Canyon Lake’s Baseball team will start their post-season play on Friday when they take on the Bandera
Bulldogs on the road after another close loss to Fredericksburg, 9-8.
With this set-back, The Lake will go into their final District 28-4A contest needing a win for a chance of having a play-in game, based on Fredericksburg’s outcome with Llano. A loss will knock this year’s edition of the Hawk baseball world into a wait till next year motif.
It was Senior Night and this young squad will need to have two more wins coupled with a Freddie loss so Tanner Sellers can realize his and the teams second year of playoff battles.
“This was a good game,” Senior Sellers commented. “We never stopped fighting and we kept our heads up and started our come-back and that will give us a shot on Friday.”
Seller’s might be that good luck charm for CL as this first baseman started last year as a transfer student which would be the first post-season contest since the 2010 Hawk team.
Two years in a Canyon Lake uniform and two years in the playoffs would be a good omen if The Lake can win and have a Bille loss.
Canyon Lake has an opportunity and will need their hitting that was unleashed on Tuesday to be in action in their Bulldog battle with some pitching for some condiments.
In this loss, CL let their visitors open a, 9-3 lead going into their half of the 4th inning. From that part of the game till the final out, the Hawks had 5 unanswered runs and ending the game with the bases loaded and one score away to still be playing.
The top of the Hawk’s batting order had a great night by applying pressure with a hefty .643 average and knocking in 6 of the 8 runs.
Caleb Williams, Mason Lee, and Brandon Robinson each had 3 hits a piece and a combined 3 extra-base hits with 2 doubles and one triple. Sellers set the table in his last home game in reaching base on 3 of his 4 plate appearances.
CL had an OBA (On Base Average) of .513 but still could not close the deal in this heartbreaker.
Cale Claycomb relieved Matt Anderson with a 3 pitch strikeout that squelched a Billie 5 run 3rd inning. And after a 2 run homer to start the 4th, the Freddie fire would finally be doused allowing a welcomed Hawk comeback.
Playing with fire is not a good way to win games and that will need to be evident when Canyon Lake starts their final district contest against the cellar dweller Bulldogs.
“I liked the way we fought back after being down, 9-3,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “Sometimes a team will press but we played a good ball-game.”
Canyon Lake will be able to solve their press this Friday for an outside chance of having another game for Sellers.
That would be a swell send-off for Sellers and this Hawk Nation!!
Go Hawks!!
