CL’s Baseball get Much Needed Win over Billies, 6-4
Canyon Lake’s Baseball team won their first District 28-4A contest after a 5 run comeback in the 6th inning that helped keep hope alive in getting a play-off spot.Fredericksburg had forged to a 4 run advantage after those first two innings which would give this Hawk team and fans a familiar feeling to those previous district losses.
“I was proud of the way our guys stayed focused after giving up 3 in that first inning,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “(Tyler) Pauly hung in there and kept us in the ball game.”
The Hawks had a chance to draw first blood in that first inning after Caleb Williams singled and advanced to 3rd base with just one out that would give The Lake two chances for a score. But a strike-out and line out left that run on 3rd base.
Scoring runs have been a problem for Canyon Lake this district season and producing with runner’s in scoring position had another wasted opportunity. With a 5 run inning in their first game with Boerne, the Hawks had walked away with just one run in their next two outings.
In Freddie’s home half, this home team would respond, with 4 hits and a walk after their first Billie batter had a fly ball out to right field. Tyler Pauly would not wilt by coaxing a strikeout and pop-up leaving 2 runners on base. But the damage in surrendering 3 runs, for a team struggling for scoring runs, could be prevalent in how this team would play as this game continue.
A 10 pitch inning, offensively, would not give CL’s players enough time for water before returning to the field to start the 2nd stanza and another run for Fredericksburg would put Canyon Lake, in desperation land, being down 4 runs and needing a win to keep their hopes in working their way to getting into a playoff spot as this first round of games comes to a close next week when the Hawks meet Bandera.
Pauly would have a 9 pitch count in that next inning but one of those pitches was deposited over the fence and that gave the Billies a4 run lead.
Canyon Lake would get on the board in the 3rd starting with a hit and walk before Brandon Robinson would single driving in Williams who had reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in this frame. With the bases loaded Kolten Ramey’s line-out to 3rd base would give CL no more damage to administer in trailing, 4-1.
The Hawks had 7 consecutive outs going into the 6th inning and Fredericksburg still holding onto their 3 run lead. Then Canyon Lake’s starting spilling over the spillway and Robinson started this frame with a single and Pauly would duplicate that feat putting the first two Hawks on base.
Ramey would ‘work’ a walk and that word doesn’t do this at bat justice as CL needed to keep this inning going without giving up an out. Ramey would foul off two pitches to stay alive for another pitch that would finally be placed out of the strike zone that loaded the bases.
Ethan Slater was next up and to this point of the game, had not administered much damage until getting enough of the ball for an infield hit scoring Robinson and a, 4-2 Hawk deficit and still no outs.
A Billie error would score another run and still not registering an out as the water from The Lake was still wreaking damage to those Billies on the wrong side of this Hawk Dam.
Tanner Sellers who has been hit by a pitch a team leading 6 times was the recipient once again which scored Ramey with the tying run, 4-4.
Matt Anderson joined this party with another single giving CL the lead and helping wipe away a lot of angst during this first round of district play. This would be the Hawks first lead since round-robin slate had started and this coming from a 5 run inning. Seven straight Hawks reaching base safely would be just what the doctored ordered which was capped off with a Mason Lee walk for that all important insurance run and, 6-4 lead.
Now it would be up to CL’s pitching to hold up their end of this contest and Pauly would respond with his 4th scoreless inning since giving up a solo homer in that 2nd inning.
Pauly would take the mound in that final inning and wanting to add more drama would walk the lead-off Billie and that next Billie reaching base via an error. No outs and two on second and third base would have a rescue call for Matt Anderson who would promptly strikeout his first batter.
A walk would load the bases and that now have the winning run on first base. This type of ending might help Canyon Lake as they maneuver through the rest of their district season. A double play on a grounder to Pauly now at 2nd base and then tagging the 2nd Billie advancing to second base, that finished this inning and game in the Hawks favor, 6-4.
“That was our most impressive moment in the game,” Coach Escamilla admonished. “When our guys had runners on second and third base and no outs in the bottom of the 7th and they got it done!”
No doubt, a great win for a deserving group of players and now a chance to keep this district set of games going and looking for a 2 game winning streak when Bandera comes knocking next week.
