High School Football season is less than a week away and your Canyon Lake Hawks have hopefully answered some of those questions the Coaching Staff had going into this season. After a month of intense practices and two scrimmages to assess.

                 Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Lake had another successful scrimmage against a Leander Glenn team that went 2 rounds in last year’s playoff as a 5A occupant.

This was two good scrimmages based on the schools played were a 5A coupled with a 4A Division II State Champion (Cuero). These games hopefully instilled some confidence for the Hawks that will have a lot of newbies in their starting line-up.

“We had a solid performance,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “Our demeanor was better but we still need to work on our Special Teams and stopping those 3rd down plays on defense.”

Both teams had some offensive success with the Grizzlies capitalizing on their passes while CL had several break-a-way runs which speaks volumes for this offensive line and running backs as a whole.

During a live 12 minute quarter, both teams were able to score a touchdown each with Glenn stopping CL’s first drive and then a short punt set up a short field and score for the home team.

That was after Canyon Lake stopped the Grizzlies on their first drive with a Nic Rivera interception in the end zone. That was CL’s second successful bend but not break defensive effort in these last two scrimmages.

            Let’s Go Canyon Lake!!

The Hawks did respond quickly after Glenn opened the scoring with a 6 play 60 yard drive that had some explosive plays for a quick score and taking right at 2 minutes to accomplish.

“Hopefully we get better this week before the real games start,” Coach Drum stated. “But I did like the way we responded after their score.”

Canyon Lake’s Slot-T looked good while The Lake’s passing had several drops with some wide open players in Hawk Green….which will hopefully be rectified when the Hawks go to Marble Falls this Friday.

Kyle Yuill is ready to start his Senior Season!

Another sign that proved to be a positive for the defensive squad was applying pressure on the Grizzlies QB, with a lot of that pressure being applied by two Hawks who seemed to be a constant participant in running down the Grizzlies Quarterback.

Senior Kyle Yuill and Sophmore Kolten Ramey knew the type of gum Glenn’s QB was chewing by the smell after this affair.

“They got motors and are getting more comfortable with each week,” Coach Drum quipped. “And on offense Kyle (Yuill) is always fired up and is our emotion leader.”

Those were some of those questions that were answered during August work-outs as their next appearance, the curtain will be raised, to see just what this year’s crew will unleash in game action.

“We’re not holding back” Yuill said matter of factly. “This is my Senior year and I want to take advantage and not leave anything on the field and always give, 100%.”

‘Yuill Be Back’ would be a good catch phrase for this work-horse as he commented on how this group might react when a mess up will rear it’s ugly hand.

                             Go Hawks!!

“We will have a short memory and get after them on the very next play,” Yuill said enthusiastically. “We will be ready to make up for those mistakes on that next play and keep playing hard and not give up.”

Sounds like a, ‘Yuill be back plan’, for a team that seems to be making an exclamation point in place of those question marks….Marble Falls will be ready and now with the season starting in earnest, the performance will be for real!!

Go Hawks and Beat the Mustangs!!
