CL Hawks has Success in First Football Scrimmage

“We were pleased with the effort,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “Our defense started first and were able to stop Cuero in the red zone….then our first offensive play went 70 yards and that got our kids going.”

With that first play being that successful had Junior Derek Wiatrek having those honors, “Those younger players were able to establish confidence and our offense was able to move the ball,” Coach Drum beat.
“It was a crazy feeling and I did not feel like it was me,” Wiatrek said in a daze. “Our line did a great job with their blocks and there was only one guy that I stiffed armed and then ran as fast as I could….I think the play call was a surprise for them.”
On winning a scrimmage against the team that won it all in Division II 4A last year, “It is really exciting and a real good team effort and we are excited to have another good look this Friday against a good Leander Glenn team,” Wiatrek continued. “We have bonded and are looking forward to a new season….being in the shadow of the previous two year’s teams has given us a chip on our shoulders and a lot of the guys are going to give it all we got….it is a big honor to play up to their standards.”
Coach Drum has to be cautiously optimistic after finally lining up against players with a different color uniform. “Our Defense gave up one touchdown which came during the last part of our scrimmage,” Drum said. “Peyton (McMullen) passing game was encouraging and he looked a year older.”
Derek Wiatrek is ready to get the season going.
Coach Drum was not being narley in that statement, but The Lake has been in this situation 3 years ago when Ben Fulton was starting his Junior season and had a coming out year with a good all round game and career.
“I am seeing the same thing as when we had Fulton starting his 2nd year and hopefully we can have that overall improvement as we did that year,” Coach surmised.
Coach Drum (as all Coaches will do) did mention this group of players having to reduce their penalties, “That is one of our, to do, Goals we have on our board that helps us know if we had a good game….reducing penalties is number 1 on that list of things we need to help in getting a win.”
Defensively, the Hawks defense, was able to have a great pass rush and we even had some sacks which will be a must as this year will have CL playing a majority of schools that have more passing plays.
On what is expected this Friday in this final scrimmage before the curtain opens in Marble Falls, “Leander will be a good test for us and we will know more when we have a live scrimmage and the Coaches will not be on the field to help….but more than anything else, we were pleased on how well our guys handled the heat.”
With practices being a morning affair, this was indeed a good sign for the Hawks and now one more scrimmage before another year of Canyon Lake Football @ Leander Glenn starting at 5:30pm.
