CL Hawks Start Jelling in Win over Burnet, 3-1

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks run their winning streak to 5 games after taking the Burnet Dogs in 4 sets, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 25-16.

“I am pleased with the growth of our team and the level of comfort that are reaching trying new things offensively,” Head Coach Kim Clemons said. “We must get quicker on our read defense on the back row and solidify our blocks on the front row as we approach district. We will get these tidbits in shape quickly.”
Coach Clemons continued, “We are excited and ready for the excitement when District play begins!”
The Lake has been on fire during this streak and are starting to look like a serious team when district does starts up in a couple of weeks.
CL was able to take control of their first set while Olivia Robinson was serving, as the Hawks, stretched their lead from 2 to 6 points during that rally. A Robinson ace and 3 kills from Caroline Kullberg did much of the damage, 12-5 lead.
Canyon Lake had an 8 point lead and finished the first set with that same number of separation. Five different Hawks had a kill while taking care of the ball in having just 5 unforced errors.

That would be the key in this 4 set affair as each win had the same number of unforced errors with that 2nd set with an increase of errors to 15 in that loss.
Those errors would make it hard to climb out of the hole CL dug to start this set. The Lady Bulldogs ballooned up their lead to 6 points, 11-17. Canyon Lake was able to whittle down that deficit but the hill was to high to climb in the loss.
That would be the only time in this match that had the Hawks in a bind as on those other 3 sets, the wins were convincing and thorough.
The Lake had 5 different players with 5 or more kills as their mayonnaise was spread all over their bread for a good lunch. Riley Shear had one of her more active outings with 5 kills and a block in this match.

“As this season has gone along we have been getting closer and have more trust in each other,” Shear stated. “Sometimes we lose energy and get down on ourselves but we have been practicing a lot and that has us jelling.”
Shear was one of many Hawks on this night having a good dose of jelling after that slow down in that 2nd Set that was mentioned.
Cassidy Felps should get a lot of credit with her assists as that part of CL’s game has jelled with a plethora of players able to get some kills.
“We are doing a lot of skill practice and that has made us more comfortable,” Felps said. “Before every play we communicate on where our blockers are and how we are going to approach that serve.”
Felps had been jelling on this night amassing 34 Assists as Canyon Lake will only go as far based on the play of this player.

Canyon Lake continued to apply pressure in those next two sets, which would not give Burnet any chance of staging a serious threat. CL’s 13 point win was the largest in the 3rd set and in that final stanza, the Hawks started slow but were able to stretch their largest lead on the clinching match point.
The Hawks will be back in action this Friday when they face Manor while inching closer to the start of District 28-4A play on September 27th on the road in Boerne.
