Hawks Freshman Get Back on Winning Track Over Texans

Helijah Johnson, Shayne Moss, and Ryan Verette are back to winning after disposing the Texans, 36-07.

Canyon Lake’s Freshman team had gone over two seasons without a loss until last week when Weiss was able to score a victory with some timely returns with special teams and a fumble. So, what team would welcome a chance to play have this one loss Freshman squad?

Capital Farm Credit is all in For The Hawks!!

Wimberley had the opportunity to see if they might give this battle tested crew their 2nd straight loss.

The Texan’s were out gained by a 4 to 1 yards ratio with the two first drives by each team would give Hawk fans an idea of which team might come out as victor.

Wimberley had a 3 play and punt series while The Lake would make their statement on the 2nd play when Helijah Johnson took the hand off and punished the field on a 70 yard jaunt to the end zone and Hawk lead that would never be challenged.

“I’m coming into every game wanting good quality tackles,” Johnson said when remarking on how well the defense played. “I like making big hits and we knew we had to come back up big….they are still our rivals and of course I am happy.”

Johnson has a way of making his presence known on both sides of the ball as his runs gives this bruising rusher a chance to make the defensive side of the opposition be hit instead of doing the hitting.

The Texan’s finished with -12 yards on this night that would reach -51 in that first half of play. For the game, Wimberley was able to go into positive yardage late in the 3rd quarter on WT’s only scoring drive that went 55 yards on 14 plays.

Go Hawks Way to Beat the Texans

CL would score on all their possessions except for 3 when the game ended, one by fumbling, and once during the 3rd quarter when Johnson was 1 yard short of a first down deep in the Texan’s side of the field.

Shayne Moss was another Hawk that was able to break the century mark that was highlighted with an 89 yard run after the Texan’s only score as a payback score. That was the 3rd touchdown run for Moss as the Hawks would start another winning streak at the expense of these Back-Bone Neighbors.

“I got moved to fullback this year and I got to give them some payback,” Moss said when asked about his score coming right after the Texan’s had scored on Canyon Lake. “My lineman were able to open a hole and I saw two safeties but they were being blocked and I just decided I was going to book it and I knew that there would not be anyone who would catch me now.”

Canyon Lake controlled both sides of the line throughout this contest as the Team Stats will attest.

Go Hawks Way to Beat Wimbo!!

The Lake’s QB Hunter Anderson had one of his most complete game with 29 yards on the ground and a perfect 2 for 2 passing reaching 56 yards. Hayden Baker (21) and Chase Anderson (35) had those catches helping every aspect of this game working in high gear.

Canyon Lake defense continues to their dominance after allowing right at 100 yards for the 3rd straight game. On this night, several Hawk’s found themselves pitching tents they were in the Texan’s backfield so often.

Ryan Verette was the first player dressed in the Hawk Green that had started a campfire after those first two Wimberley plays had Verette taking down the Texan’s for losses.

“We played our best,” Verette said confidently. “I don’t like Wimberley and they couldn’t beat us… we were too quick and strong.”

Last year this 8th grade team did not have a chance to play the Texan’s because Mountain Valley’s football schedule was based with all the Comal Middle Schools.

Canyon Lake has now reintroduced this rivalry and will look forward to 3 more meetings.

The Hawks will be back in action this next Thursday when Smithville comes to the Hawk Nest to see if this Freshman team can start another winning streak.

Way to Go Hawks!!
