Canyon Lake Could not Climb the Hill in Loss to Billies, 33-20
Canyon Lake could not keep up with Fredericksburg on either side of the ball in this hard fought loss, 33-20.
The Hawks find themselves in 3rd place in District 14-4A Division with another tough outing coming up next week with a Lampasas team that has offense in spades on the road next week.
“Too many mistakes,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “This was an evenly matched team and it comes down to discipline ant they flipped that part of the game on us.”
Coach Drum continued on his thoughts, “We fought back and made it a game but we will need to get back as our mistakes are fixable.”
CL had their worst offensive outing on this night after this Billie club was able to rush for 270 yards and winning the yardage totals and that resulted with an opponent winning the time of possession stat, which is usually a slot-t staple.
On this night, The Lake, could not keep Billieville out of the end-zone in the 2nd half as both teams went to their lockers at half all tied up, 14-14. Fredericksburg scored two touchdowns that had CL climbing an uphill battle.
James Bates topped the 100 yard rushing mark that was helped on the last play in that first half with a 59 yard run up the middle and scoring with no time left on the clock.
That surprise score had the potential of giving Canyon Lake an advantage, as they would have first dibs in starting the 2nd half, with the ball. But it was a short lived advantage as CL would not pose a threat of scoring until a pass with under 4 minutes on the game clock that had Jeremy Greene catching a beautiful thrown pass from QB Peyton McMullen that drew Canyon Lake back, with a one score deficit, 20-27 score.
That 65 yard pass play was 35 yards further than the longest Canyon Lake pass play this season.
Canyon Lake’s game looked promising after scoring the first touchdown on a short 35 yard drive that was a result of the Hawk’s defense that backed the Billie offense 10 yards and a punt of 26 yards. That helped CL in setting up shop deep in Freddie’s side of the field.
A 10 yard pass to Bates helped the drive stay alive as up to that point of the game, Canyon Lake had not had a running play go for more than 2 yards. After the completion, it took just 4 plays covering 22 yards on an 8 yard TD run by Bates.
The Hawk’s offense went back in hiding until that last explosive play before half that had both teams looking in the mirror, 14 all.
Successful drives were hard to come by with just 8 first downs for the game as Canyon Lake had averaged 17 for the season.
The penalty bug was in full bloom after 75 negative yards keeping the offense grasping for air. Canyon Lake is presently having their worst season in penalty yardage which would not have been a big problem in previous years…but with a struggling offense those mistakes can be lethal.
Fredericksburg’s defense was the deciding factor in this loss in giving up just 2 yards per play, taking away CL’s two explosive plays of 65 (pass) and 59 (run) yards, those 35 other plays totaled 88 yards or 2.5 yards per play.
That would be the case on this night and now The Lake will need to see if they can rebound in Badger country next week and then a final game at home against Liberty Hill in two weeks.
