CL Gold Team Ties Fredericksburg in 2nd Game Series, 6-6

The CL Hawks Gold team continued their 3 game series with Fredericksburg with the same results, finishing in a tie, 6-6.

A combined score of 18-18 when adding in last week’s results will or can give you an idea of how close these two clubs are to each other.

However, when looking at Thursday’s stats below you will see one huge stat that would play into the end result…as the Gold team committed 3 lost fumbles while dominating the Billies on the defensive side of the ball in giving up just 32 total yards.

“We are not a team that can outscore our mistakes,” Coach John Barthels stated. “But this is a fun group to work with!”

Those mistakes started right on the opening kick-off as the ball bounced off a Hawk’s chest and into the waiting arms of Bulldogs to start this contest. That fumble did not allow CL to establish their presence and would result in having Fredericksburg starting each half with a possession.

CL’s defense allowed just 7 yards of total offense in that first half but that opening fumble followed by a 2nd miscue when The Lake was driving late in that second quarter on the Billies 29 yard line left both teams searching for points.

Canyon Lake had the ball twice in that first half with a failed fourth down try and a lost fumble. The result? 0-0 halftime score.

After another defensive clamp down to start the 2nd stanza this Gold team would fumble again at their 35 yard line which would give the Billies a short field to do damage.

That became a truism when Fredericksburg took 8 plays to travel 35 yards for the games first score from one yard out and just 5:47 left in the game.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake would respond with a 30 yard kick-off return from Peyton McCormick to the mid-field stripe. Then a quick 4 play drive with McCormick finishing off what he started scoring on a 37 yard run for what would be a tying score, 6-6.

With two and a half minutes to play this stalwart Hawk defense would not be able to stop a first down by Freddie Land on a penalty on a punt that put this game on hold until that final deciding contest can be decided next Thursday in Fredericksburg.

Hopefully, it that contest ends in a tie for regulation play will be allowed to have an overtime to decide a winner that would be worth 3 wins.

Go Hawks!!
