CL Hawks JV Do Enough to Win over Taylor, 21-8
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity Football team (5-1) started their District 28-4A sojourn with a win over the Taylor Ducks in a game the host’s led throughout, 21-8.
“It was a good win for us to start the district season,” Coach Bret Hodges said. “One key contribution from Braden Maxson. He played linebacker for the first time in the absence of his brother who will travel with the Varsity….We did not play perfectly but we found a way to win.”
The Lake’s first drive set the table with a 4 play 59 yard march to the goal line and first score, 7-0. This drive would have Brock Coburn contributing 45 of those steps with Reid Simpson pitching in his 4 yarder.
“We lost some of our intensity but we were able to turn it back around,” Coburn said in response to the quick start in this affair.
CL would hold this Duck offense later in that first quarter when they stopped a Taylor 4th down conversation chance with no gain and needing just one yard to continue the drive.
That would give the Home Team a chance to increase their lead, which would happen on a 61 yard drive that took 9 plays before, Tanner Davis would bull over from one yard out and a two score Hawk lead, 13-0.
The key for this series had Canyon Lake needing 20 yards for a first after a holding penalty. Devyn Placeres’ 12 yard jet sweep would nullify that penalty and allowed a more conventional slot-t drive for this score.
Quarterback Keith Bowers was the author of the explosive play after calling his own number for a 32 yard run and setting up the Good Guys on the Duck’s 15 yard line. Placeres would help get CL to the door with a 10 yard run that set up the Davis score.
Taylor would wake up late in the first half in driving 74 yards to score leaving 14 seconds on the clock.
This touchdown had the added two point conversion giving this game a whole different halftime talk for each team.
Especially with the Ducks being able to take opening 2nd Half kick-off for a chance to tie or take the lead.
That would not materialize as Coburn was able to quell the Duck’s after recovering a fumble after just 3 plays for Taylor.
It would take Canyon Lake one play to put this game away when Bowers found a wide open Blayne Carnes for a 43 yard touchdown pass.
With a two score lead, Taylor would get going as they started to gobble up yardage in larger chunks. The Ducks had traveled 36 yards in 6 plays before a Tanner Schultz blitz that took care of this drive and not allowing the Visitors a chance to continue this drive.
“Coburn called a ‘tank to the left’ defensive play and I just saw the runner and made the tackle,” Schultz said with simplicity. “I was just not going to let him get up the field.”
Defense would dominate the rest of this contest as this Hawk Junior Varsity continues their impressive year and looks to continue the year against Burnet next Thursday at the Hawk Nest.
“We are going to practice harder and work on keeping our intensity for the whole game,” Coburn said in response to how this team will ready themselves for Burnet next week. “We are not going to slack off.”
“We will need to put more points on the board and win every game,” Schultz said in a classic simple understanding of wins and losses.
Simple game and hopefully good simple results.
Go Hawks!!
