CL Lady Hawks Start Hot in Win over Poteet, 46-22
The Lady Hawks Basketball Team unveiled their season with a win over the Poteet Aggies, 46-22 at the Hawk Nest.
This win moves Canyon Lake to an all-time record of 150-152 as this could be the year, The Lake Basketball team joins Football and Volleyball as the only Hawk sports that sport a better than 50% record.
“We executed well offensively and we had a positive assists to turnover ratio,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “Anytime you can start the game with less turnovers than assists then you are going to win the game.”
This game started with CL behind by 4 points and then one of the best inside the arc shooting percentages (82%) took place after Sophia Barber drained a 3 pointer to draw the home team to a one point deficit, 3-4.
A Marley Carrizales 2 pointer was followed by a Lainee Moses two pointer after a Carrizales assist, 7-4.
Poteet would tie the game up on their next trip down the floor, 7-7 and that would be the last time this opening contest would be tied.
The Hawks would outscore the Aggies, 22-3 to close out the first half giving Canyon Lake a chance to coast home. This game started with two starters on the bench via the injury bug which had Coach Burleson using his bench to help take care of those shortcomings.
Carrizales was on fire throughout the 2nd quarter scoring 9 points with several other accolades coming with her relentless play on this night. How bout 2 steals, 5 steals and 2 rebounds all in that stanza that led to this route.
“I have been practicing hard and when you practice hard you play hard,” Carrizales said matter of factly.
Moses help start the run in the first quarter scoring 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and a rarefied block to bring to the table.
This is the 4th year of this back court duo, of Carrizales and Moses, and Marley commented, “We kinda of know each other.” Which had to lead to how well these two took care of business on both sides of the court in combining for 10 steals which led to a combined 27 points.
As Carrizales closed with her thoughts on the upcoming season, “We are going to have a great season and work hard every game and stay focused.”
Canyon Lake will reap dividends as the boards were in the hands of two more Hawks.
Chelsea Tschoepe and Kaitlyn Cox combined for 19 rebounds which help keep the Visitors with several one shot possessions.
The Hawks will be in action on Friday with their first road game in San Antonio when the face Lee Academy.
