CL Hawks Double Up Navarro in Win, 72-35

Hawks getting instructions during their convincing win over Navarro.

Canyon Lake had a convincing win over Navarro at the Hawk Nest after sprinting to a 10 point quarter lead that was increased throughout this game in doubling the Panthers, 72-35.

               Way to Go Hawks!!

“It was a good win,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “We finally were able to put away a team. That was our focus at halftime and we came out and executed really well. We did what we needed to do against a team like that.”

Patrick McAuliffe (15) was joined by Rylee Spaulding (11) and Rico Griffin (10) with double digit scoring that was accentuated when all but one Hawk scoring in this run-a-way victory.

Long range shots were going in the basket like lay-ups as the Navarro zone defense had no answers for CL’s offense on this night. Shooting 64% from beyond the arc would attest to how well Canyon Lake controlled on this night.

“Yeah, we shot the ball really well,” Coach Chapman commented on those long-range shots. “Anytime you can shoot like that it makes the game much easier. It also really helped that the threes we did take were inside-out threes and in rhythm. We can shoot the ball well, when we take quality shots.”

Another stellar game from the free throw line after being successful on 81% of their attempts. At the start of this year’s campaign, The Lake, had not figured out those charity shots after coming out of the gates with a paltry, 33% in those first two games.

In Canyon Lake’s last 8 games, free throws, have started living up to it’s name with a team 77% shooting percentage that has raised this season’s percentage to a respectable 65%.

            Way to Go Hawks!!

The Hawks seem to be crawling out of their hole that was fallen into after losing 4 games last week. In the last two contests, scoring over 70 points has helped as those type of numbers would translate to scoring over 100 points in the NBA.

“I think we figured out some things on our tournament last week,” Coach Chapman remembered. Although we only won one game, we started play much better after the first game, so I have been very pleased with that. This season can be a process sometimes and I finally feel we found our footing and just have to continue to improve on what we are doing.”

Canyon Lake will now continue with some more battles this Friday and then a tournament after Christmas. How those contests pan out will hopefully have some more good games on both sides of the court.

“We have found some stuff that works well for us,” Chapman continued. “Right now, regardless of who we are playing, we have to continue to play to our strengths and do the things that we know help us be successful.”

That will need to be the focus and this version of the Hawks seems to be coming from those bench players as these past two games has had a slew of scores whether those players are sitting on the bench to start the game or not. But it is not only scoring but looking at the stat lines below those other intangibles like assists, steals, and rebounds have been a welcome sight.

Let’s Go Hawks & Stay Cool!!

“We have a deep team with a bunch of guys that can do some different things for us,” Coach Chapman closed. “It is nice to be able to bring some guys off our bench that are able to provide us with some energy and bring a different element to the game.”

Canyon Lake will welcome Eagle Pass this Friday for an early tip coming at 3pm with the sub varsity teams and then CL Varsity following.

Go Hawks!!
