Basketball: Lady Hawks Start District with Loss to Fredericksburg

Senior Post Jessie Melendez scores in earlier win.

The CL Lady Hawks started flat in their opening District 28-4A game with Fredericksburg after a convincing loss, 70-36.

                       Go Hawks!!

“Fredericksburg is outstanding,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “We struggled moving the ball against them early and it set us back. It was tough start and they couldn’t miss in the first quarter. I was pleased with how we hung in there and completed the rest of the way.”

Canyon Lake would score 36 points which turned out to be just 6 more points than the Billies had in that opening period.

Marley Carrizales continues to play well by being the only Hawk with double digit scoring. The Lake were able to sink 11 baskets with 9 of those coming from an assist.

The Hawks had their best game from the free throw line after sinking 76% of those attempts.

The Lake still has plenty of time to secure some momentum in working on qualifying for post-season but on this night it was apparent that Billie Land would be one of the Top Dogs in district play.

Carrizales and Lainee Moses continued to be successful with the assists as these two Hawks have passed two past ladies in the All-Time listing in this category.

Alexa Ramos and Reagan Heun graduated two years ago atop the assist ledger with a combined, 297 while Moses and Carrizales topping that number presently with a combined, 384.

When adding Chelsea Tschoepe to that duet, CL has 527 assists from those 3 players. It wasn’t that long ago that CL had just one player to ever go over the 100 plateau with Tiffany Arredondo reaching 125 in her career back during the 2011 season.

Let’s Go Hawks & Stay Cool!

Canyon Lake’s steals has these same 3 Hawks that will be etched in the top 4 All-Time as this district season continues.

Ramos finished with 301 in her career and the next three are presently on the court this season with Carrizales leading in a close race with 237 follow by Moses (234) and Tschoepe (231).

Canyon Lake will welcome Wimberley to the Hawk Nest next Tuesday with the sub-varsity tip-offs starting at 500pm and then the Varsity will follow.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
