Boys & Girls Hawk Basketball Take it on the Chin in Losses to Boerne

Both Boys & Girls can’t keep up with Boerne.

Both of the Boy’s & Girl’s Varsity Basketball games did not end well for the Canyon Lake faithful after a 33 point loss for the boys and 15 point set-back at the hands of the Boerne whitewashing on Tuesday night.

North Shore UMC says Go Hawks!

The CL Ladies did have some glimpses of hope as the game got into the later stages and winning that last period, 3 points but it was way to little to late.

“Our effort was good last night,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “We were pretty close throughout and just didn’t catch any breaks. If we can keep up our intensity and take care of the ball a little better then we will have a chance to make something happen.”

This loss still has the Lady Hawks (0-4) looking for their first win in District 28-4A play as their last first round of district battles come to the Hawk nest this Friday against Llano. A loss would pretty much end any hopes for a playoff spot.

Marley Carrizales continued her hot shooting after pouring in 17 points and being the lone Hawk in double digit scoring. Carrizales was perfect from beyond the arc and finished with 7 steals on the defensive side of this contest.

Carrizales and Melendez finished with 5 rebounds a piece that tied for the lead in that category.

Canyon Lake will need to start their climb this Friday as a playoff berth would depend on passing two teams for that 4th seed chance to continue this season.

With Bandera losing to Llano and now with this win has the Hawks all alone at the bottom of the league standings.

The Lady Greyhounds led by 11 points in that first quarter and used those two middle quarters to increase their lead by another 7 points as they are perched at 2nd place entering their next round Fredericksburg continues as the ring-bearer in district play.

CL’s Boys started their first quarter, 0-fer, as they failed to score a basket which spelled doom right out of the gate as it would be another game without any outside shooting. That would allow Boerne to pack it in and as that cold shooting made their defense to seal this affair.

“It was obviously a tough game,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “They are really talented and big, so
it was a tough match up for us. We didn’t play our best, but you have to give them credit for that. I thought
we had a good plan going in, but they just made more plays than us. We really slowed down the guys we were
focused on, but they just had a too many guys, so it is hard to slow them all down.”

Coach Chapman continued, “Offensively, they match up well against what our strengths are, so it was
hard to get into a rhythm and get going. We just have to bounce back and move on. We still have 8 more
games, and a lot of basketball left to play. We will learn from this, move forward and get ready for Llano.”

Canyon Lake did show life in that 2nd Quarter after scoring 21 points but a 17 point second half while giving up 40 resulted in this 33 point loss.

Hawk’s defense looked like the US Border these past few years without having any chance to stop these run-away Greyhounds.

Canyon Lake did have two Hawks finish with double digit scoring with Patrick McAuliffe (12) and Rylee Spaulding (11) in a game that saw only 4 assists and 20 rebounds.

Rico Griffin led with 7 rebounds and it was the 7th time in a row in leading the Hawks with the most boards in a game.

This was CL’s first loss of District 28-4A play as the Hawks will go on the road on Friday to Llano in hopes of righting their ship.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
