Canyon Lake’s Sub-Varsity Was Unstoppable in Win over John Paul, 55-36

Shawn Pendleton and Matt Taliaferro control the paint is win over John Paul.

Canyon Lake JV-Freshman slow start went into to hyper speed in taking care of John
Paul Guardians, 55-36.

                   Go Hawks!

“We had 11 guys that got after it defensively,” Head JV Coach Ryan Garney stated.

All but two Hawks were able to get an assist in winning a game packed full of energy and
showing the Hawk Nation a glimpse of the future for round-ballers with the Freshman and Junior Varsity sharing the court in this win.

The court was chalked full of high energy players as Matt Taliaferro did his best impression of Rico Griffin in scoring 18 points while pulling down 17 rebounds.

“It took a different mentality to get ready,” Taliaferro said when responding to how slow the team was in starting this battle. “I am getting stronger, faster, and taller and I could not do what I do without this team through our losses and wins….we are just enjoying the game.”

“He (Taliaferro) played well and cleaned up a lot of the mistakes,” Coach Garney said in referencing the monster game played by Taliaferro.

Matt Taliaferro goes wild in Hawk win.

Jeremy Greene was all over the place scoring 10 points but was even more active with 2 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks to go with this array of dominance. Playing non-stop on both sides of the court.

“We started slow since we had freshman with us but this game will give us confidence and boost us with chemistry and confidence heading into district,” Greene said astutely.

Then throw the freshman into action and action seeing a Helijah Johnson onto the hard-wood where the light footed players were nothing in trying to whisk away a ball from his hands….and scoring 9 points and 10 rebounds with reduced minutes.

This contest took a while before CL’s Freshman/JV team introduced themselves to each other and started scoring points in bunches with 43 poured in during the 2nd half that had a first half that would garner just 12 points during those first 16 minutes of play.

CL shot just 20% from the floor in that 2nd half but was a different team coming out of halftime shooting 63% while controlling the boards with 12 offensive and 36 defensive rebounds.

Those JV Hawk players did play longer during this battle but the Freshman were showing a ton of energy where there would be no match.

Steals 7 4 11

Jeremy Greene was all-round game was impressive.

CL would start that final period with a 3 pointer from Shawn Pendleton that had your Hawks with a double digit lead that would remain until that final buzzard. That make had the whole bench going crazy.

“On the day I feel the worst, I shoot it and it goes in,” Pendleton quipped. “On the days I feel good on the floor when I shoot it, then it will miss.”

The Lake continued increasing their lead as they reached a 22 point advantage before a late Guardian 3 point goal that brought the final to 19 point win.

Canyon Lake’s Freshman and Junior Varsity will divide and conquer as they will enter District 28-4A on Friday when they will be in Bandera to start their district games.
