Canyon Lake welcomed their new year with a win in a high scoring contest against Comfort at the Hawk Nest on Friday, 71-54.

                  Go Hawks!!

“It was a very good win for us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “They are a solid team that have won a lot of games this season, so it was a nice to come out and get a decisive win.”

The game started with an array of back and forth arsenal from both schools while Comfort was able to squeak a one point advantage during that first period, 20-19. This quarter had the teams knotted up on 6 occasions.

Comfort did carve out a 7 point advantage, 20-13 before The Lake was able to finish with two 3 pointers from Tyler Pauly and Kyle Morris that closed the period to that one point difference.

CL would continue their hot streak in outscoring Comfort, 10 points and half-time lead, 43-34. The Hawk’s shot 70% from beyond the arc which helped in the separation needed for this eventual win.

Rico Griffin (19), Partick McAuliffe (16), and Rylee Spaulding (11) were the 3 Hawks that reached double digit scoring. Griffin finished this game with double digit rebounding (12) while dishing out 3 assists and 2 steals.

This would be Griffin’s sixth double-double game while averaging, 15.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game during the pre-district schedule.

Pauly finished with 8 points and used his guard play with 5 assists helping to compliment his solid game.

With a 13 point advantage during the 3rd quarter, would allow Canyon Lake, to have every Hawk play in this game going into that final stanza.

                  Let’s Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake’s 16 assists would show how well the Hawk’s offense controlled this contest with many of those baskets coming inside the paint. Spaulding was a perfect 5 for 5 in that area while Griffin finished by scoring 9 field goals near the rim.

“We did a good job of executing the game plan for the most part and did a good job of making some adjustments as the game went on,” Coach Chapman continued. “Very pleased and proud of our seniors right now. That are doing a great job of leading by example and vocally. They are making things happen on the court and doing the little things off the court that go into winning games.”

Shooting 58% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc would be all the kindling needed to sustain this fire and win. That one downfall came at the charity stripe after faltering with a 33% free throw percentage.

                   Go Hawks!!

Comfort (17-5) had beaten Bandera and had a loss to Fredericksburg to give the Hawk Nation a sneak to upcoming district battles. Coming into this game, Comfort was averaging 74 points per game. The Hawks were able to hold this school, 20 points under that average showing how well your Hawks played on both sides of the ball.

“I feel we are peaking at the right time right now,” Coach Chapman closed. “We have a couple of weeks before district gets going, so we just have to continue to get a little bit better each day and keep it going.”

Canyon Lake has now won 7 of their last 8 contests and will be back in action this Thursday on the road in Lampasas.

Way to Go Hawks!!
