CL Hawks Baseball Shuts Out Gonzales to Open Season, 6-0
The Hawks started their season with pitching as Tyler Pauly and Tanner Schultz combined for a 2 hit shut out over Gonzales in the, 6-0 win.
“With fresh arms allowed us to pitch well,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “When you get to pitch at home on opening night that helped in this start. Tyler (Pauly) had been playing basketball and he is a control pitcher and in a game like this helped us to get going early.”
Pauly was last seen scoring 13 points and CL’s last basketball game and has quickly changed his uniform in an excellent start to this season.
On what his thoughts were going into this opening night, Pauly said, “It is always important in throwing strikes because walks turn into runs…by controlling strike zone then good things will happen….I had confidence but I opened a little tight. But we wanted to comeback after last year and our goal in making the playoffs and go further.”
This Apache team had just one inning that had a chance for scoring after a having a lead-off walk that allowed that player to reach third base but ground out to third basemen Matt Anderson just beat the Gonzales batter to first and no harm done. The Apache’s only had one more batter reach base the next inning but a Dalton Stanley bullet to 2nd base took that baserunner back to his dugout that eliminated any more damage for this win.
The Hawk defense played well while receiving 8 outs via strikeout to help that cause with all three phases being in sync on this opening night.
Superintendent, Andrew Kim and School Board member, Jason York were the only Hawksters that were wild on this night after throwing out their first pitch ceremonies in recognition of the new turf and outfield fence that was installed during the offseason.
This win was celebrated with Coach Escamilla’s 350th milestone after the game heaping more festivities on this night.
The Hawks struck first with what would be the winning run in the 3rd inning when James LaLonde got CL’s first hit with two outs in this stanza. That was followed by a walk for Brandon Robinson. Pauly would help his pitching with a single scoring LaLonde and drawing first blood.
In that next inning, Mason Lee had a solid hit for a double in the left field gap to lead off and then Freshman Ty Sellers would get a 4 pitch base on balls. An infield hit for Cale Claycomb would load the bases with no outs.
“Confidence,” the world used my Lee when asked how he approached opening night. “Coach E (Escamilla) prepared us in the batter’s box and we worked for this win and we will need to keep the momentum and don’t stop working.”
Lee had a big jump with his batting last season finishing with a .304 batting average as he will look to continue last year’s results and more wins.
Enter Matt Anderson who entered his Senior season needing 12 walks to be the all-time base-on-balls Hawks was able to get one that would result in an rbi and a Hawk 2 run lead. The next 3 CL batters each scored an rbi with a ground out for the bat of Caleb Williams, a squeeze play by LaLonde, and a single from Robinson that completed the inning scoring 4 runs and a safe lead heading into those later innings.
That last score was a result of a lead-off single from Hayden Baker who would score with a Williams single and close the curtain on this opening night, 6-0.
Canyon Lake will now ready themselves for the Marion Tournament when they start play on Thursday with 3 contest. Those results will seed the Hawks for more action on Saturday.
CL’s next home date will be next Tuesday when Smithville comes to town with a 7pm first pitch. Should be some fun for those who want some good entertainment and have a good night to help get another win.
