CL Hawks JV Baseball Start Season with Win over Gonzales, 4-1
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity started with a win over Gonzales JV after some masterful pitching and timely hitting in taking care of this Apache team, 4-1.
Cody Jones was masterful on the mound in taking care of their visitors by throwing strikes 76% of the time which will always be the first item to conquer to realizing a victory.
“Throw strikes and hit hard will give us a successful game,” Jones said when asked bout his stint on the pitching mound. “I had people behind me to make the plays but I was a little nervous as I had never pitched with this many people at a game…..I knew if I pitched like I did during the scrimmages then I would do fine.”
Defense would be that next variable in securing a victory as Short-Stop Brayden Welch fielded some Gonzales shots that helped keep those Apaches from running circles around the bases.
“We played hard in our scrimmages that that helped with our good mind-set,” Welch said when responding to the Hawks defense in this game. “That good mind-set will has to be both mentally and physically and if we keep that good energy that will be our key for this season.”
Gunnar Walker led Canyon Lake with two hits while being the only Hawk to have an extra base hit (double).
A rarity was present during that 4th inning as CL was able to increase the lead after scoring 2 runs by two sacrifice fly balls. It is impossible to have more of those type of runs for obvious reasons.
The ReSporter will be following this group of players this season as this will be a good barometer for seeing how The Lake’s future will be going based on how well this team performs.
Bowers was able to earn a save by mowing down all three Apaches via strikeouts which indicates on how this might indicate a deeper pitching staff.
The old saying that if you can keep a team from scoring then you have a pretty good chance for a win.
Counting those first four scrimmages as wins, this should be a good year to watch the future games for seeing how Canyon Lake’s baseball team can continue with a winning program.

CL’s Baseball program has been able to make the post-season twice and has the fewest of any Hawk team Sport. The Hawks have had just one winning season back in 2010, 15-14. That 15 wins season, still stands as the most for any year, as there have been 3 years of 12 wins which has been the total for the last two campaigns and the only other year for having double digit victories.
Way to Go Hawks!!
