Hawk’s Baseball Sweep First Day in Marion Tournament
Canyon Lake finished their first day at the Marion Tournament with an undefeated record sweeping three games in total after disposing, Marion and Lago Vista.
“We are happy to be 3-0 at the Marion tournament,” Head Baseball Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “Pitching and defense have been stellar. The bats need to be consistent for us to do well in district, but it’s early and we will continue to work!”
Pitching and defense was certainly the key for that first day of action as this deep staff has yet to give up an earned run for the season which will go a long way in realizing wins.
In the double header night cap, Tanner Schultz continued where he left off after winning 5 games as a Freshman last year with a 3 hitter and recording 6 strikeouts while issuing one walk.
Those last two innings needed some Houdini action that had 5 Bulldogs reaching base that put two batters in scoring position with just one out recorded. A fly-out to Centerfielder Brandon Robison and a strikeout caught looking would end that threat with no damage.
For that last at bat, Marion had two quick outs, but these Bulldogs were not finished after two consecutive hits and a potential comeback. The Hawks left those players stranded after an easy come-backer to Schultz and throw to first ending the first contest.
Caleb Williams supplied the excitement after lofting his first homer over the left-field fence that needed everything in bouncing the ball off the top of the fence into gopher land. That had CL with some insurance with a 2 run lead and win.

A Hawk deep pitching staff will pay dividends in tournaments that have multiple games in a few days, as Lago Vista had nothing left in their tank after a 9 hit and 12 run final win and your Hawks continued their dominance when Cale Claycomb was called upon next up on the mound.
This one-hitter gave CL a #1 seed and waiting for their opponent to be named after Friday’s games that will have 6 other teams a chance to whittle down to that next opponent for Saturday.
The LV win had The Lake with 4 doubles, as Chase Anderson and Tanner Schultz each lead Canyon Lake with 2 hits and two of their hits being doubles. The Hawks worked 4 walks and had 3 other players hit by pitches which gave enough base runners to take care of Lago Vista.
Claycomb gave up just one hit while striking out 5 LV players as this game was well in hand after giving up two unearned run in the final inning and win.
Peyton McMullen was introduced to the mound in recording the final out and sweep for the first day of action.
The Hawks will take a 4-0 record to the diamond on Saturday in hopes of defending their championship by last year’s team.
