Lady Hawks Stave Off Llano for a Bi-District Game, 36-32
The Hawk Lady Basketball lived to see another day after racing to a 14 point first half advantage that was enough for a, 36-32 win over Llano in this play-in contest.
“We held on and won,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “Girls fought hard and battled through some adversity.”
On who made the difference in this battle? “Jessie (Melendez) had a monster game. Sophia (Barber) was on fire the first half. KT (Kaitlyn Cox) made some big plays and scored our last 5 points to win it. Real happy with a great team game.”
That monster game had a double-double for Melendez who corralled 15 rebounds and scored 11 points. Those scores happened after shooting 9 for 11 from the foul line. That by far was one her best performances in her career.
Six of those bounds were on the offensive side of the court which saw CL finish with 35 rebounds as a team.
Barber had 6 rebounds to compliment her 16 point night that had 5 beyond the arc makes. Those 3 pointers has this young lady putting distance on anyone else who might like to be the leader in this shot. Those 5 makes gives Barber 64 for the season that has a chance for more with another date this coming Tuesday against Liberty Hill.
This Hawk team has 3 players that are within the top 15 three point makes in a season, in joining Barber (1st), Chelsea Tschoepe (5th with 39) and Marley Carrizales (14th with 20).
Those 16 rebounds for Melendez helped jettison this young lady to 10th with 210 for this year. Melendez has three spots on this list as she will end her career with a hard to reach number for future Hawks.
That season top-ten has 4 players with 2 or more years and then Reagan Heun rounds out this crew in her Senior year reaching 4th place.
TOP-TEN Season Rebounding ALL-TIME Player # Year 1) Tiffany Tschoepe 297 2011 2) Tiffany Tschope 282 2010 3) Jessie Melendez 275 2019 4) Amber Ramsey 254 2012 5) Reagan Heun 253 2018 6) Amber Ramsey 241 2013 7) Katie Williams 225 2012 8) Katie Williams 216 2013 9) Jessie Melendez 213 2018 10) Jessie Melendez 210 2020
Two of the top 3 Hawk scorers (Carrizales and Tschoepe) did not make a contribution in the scoring department but were active combining for 3 assists, 4 steals, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Lainee Moses continued to add to her 1st place assist numbers leading CL with 3 for the contest.
Which brings us to those players that contribute without the fanfare and that is where Kaitlyn Cox (KT) came in loud and clear after taking and making both her shots that helped in staving this YellowJacket team and punch a Bi-District date next week for the Lady Hawks.
That game on Tuesday will be in Johnson City and will be the 2nd game of a double-header with an approximate tip-off time of 8pm.
Another good year as CL’s 21-11 season will look to continue with a date with the Panthers.
