Canyon Lake (8-1) continued their winning ways with a dramatic win over Banquete with a 2 run rally in the bottom of the 7th inning beating the Bulldogs, 4-3.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We were all a bit frustrated in game 1 today,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla recalled. “We played “atom ball” early which turned to frustration the second and third time at bat. They (Banquete) made all the plays and had key hits. Our guys found a way to win and that’s what counts. I could see our guys relaxed and ready to put a good game together for game 2. We had good at bats during the first inning. We made adjustments and I think we learned a little bit about ourselves today.”

CL only used two innings in scoring their runs after starting the first part of this contest going hitless through the first 3 stanzas and not getting a hit until that 4th frame. When Tyler Pauly floated a ball over the short-stop. The Lake had two hits in that inning but still came up empty.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the 2nd and were able to go up by 3 runs in the top of the 5th which would put CL looking up a steep hill in realizing a win while struggling to get any offense going.

But the Hawks answered that one run in scoring 2 with three hits after beginning the 5th with a fly ball out off the bat of Matt Anderson.

Ethan Slater would work his 2nd walk in the game next before Caleb Williams single that had The Lake reaching 3rd base for the first time in this contest. A James LaLonde infield out scored Slater.

With 2 outs, CL would would continue to capitalize scoring with two outs in a repeat of their last win over Medina Valley the day before. Pauly would cash in with his second of three singles scoring Williams.

Canyon Lake was within striking distance scoring with a one run deficit, 3-2.

After one out, Matt Anderson would be relieved by Hunter Anderson and continued showing more Hawk dominance in the pitching department keeping the Bulldogs at bay with CL going into their final inning for a win.

Mason Lee would start another Hawk comeback with a single as the lead-off hitter and after a strikeout had Hunter Anderson laying down a perfect bunt for a single and now and Pauly getting out of his mini-slump with his 3rd hit that tied the score, 3 all.

An intentional walk to Brandon Robinson would load the bases and give Tanner Schultz with a fielder’s choice ground ball that scored Hunter Anderson and give CL another come-back victory.

Not a Bad Day at the Office for Hunter Anderson.

Hunter Anderson would get his first win for his career as a Hawk as this type of game can instill that much needed confidence for all the freshman that are on the roster.

Hunter Anderson had a busy week after he started and won a Junior Varsity game on Monday with 12 strikeouts with a resume that has some good entries.

“It was a pretty good week,” Hunter Anderson thought back. “We came in with confidence from that prior game and we do what we need to do and get ourselves up for success.”

On what will be the motif for the Saturday games, “Stay focused and keep our bats rolling.”

CL had 4 freshman in this win and Hunter was quick with his response, “A lot of fun and we will just keep working hard….we love just being out there….this is a lot of fun.”

In that 2nd game, Canyon Lake had an 8 run first inning after 12 Hawks were introduced to home plate that had 5 hits, a player reaching base on an error, and two players that were hit by pitches.

One of those hits was a gapper to the left field fence for a triple for Caleb Williams that scored the final two runs in this break away first frame against Pearsall.

Brandon Robinson caught air with his bomb over that same fence to start that next inning and would give CL a, 9-0 lead.

“I’m not super experienced in hitting homeruns and I did not know I hit it out until a passed 1st base,” Robinson said. “I just put my head down and ran….”

Brandon Robinson making Senior Year count.

Robinson’s thoughts on that first game win, “In that first game we needed it and it was good for us to win a close game and we came through.”

On what will be the mindset on Saturday’s games, “We will go at them the same way we did today,” Robinson closed. “We will have a good ride home and get Coach some gizzards and then do what we need to do and stay in control.”

A run-ruled game had Canyon Lake scoring two runs in the top of the 5th inning when Dalton Stanley got things started after one out working a walk from the Pearsall Longhorn pitcher. A fielder’s choice and then a Jeremy Greene single would give the Hawks another chance to close the door with two outs when Hunter Anderson two run single ran the score to, 11-0.

Cale Claycomb and Peyton McMullen would combine to no-hit Pearsall for those 5 innings with Claycomb getting the win (his 2nd) and seeing McMullen get back in the groove after his shaky outing in that Monday win over Smithville.

The Hawks will play in the Final Four on Saturday with a first pitch against Hondo in Devine and with a win another chance to finish on top in this Tournament.

Go Hawks!!
