Hawks Beat Comfort in First Contest in Blanco Tournament, 5-0

Canyon Lake was busy this past week-end traveling between Blanco and Johnson City. The Hawks played their first game against Comfort and came out on top, 5-0.

Jodi Glenn-Millhouse has taken center-field over in stride.

CL had just 4 hits but errors and having timely hits would prove to be the difference in scoring in this game.

Add a very solid game by Pitcher Maddy Puente in the circle after allowing just three hits put this game in the win column for The Lake.

On what has been done to cut down on giving up walks this season Maddy Puente said with resolve, “I have opened up more on my stride and I just go out and pitch and have nothing on my mind.”

That has certainly been working after several games with 2 or less walks per game for the Senior Pitcher.

Canyon Lake would get all the runs needed in that first inning when Jodi Glenn-Millhouse single had this speedster on 2nd after stealing one of her 4 stolen bases in this contest. A wild pitch and would give the Hawks, what would be, the only run needed.

Alex Jones received a walk one and scored on a Maddy Puente sacrifice fly ball for that 2nd run.

In the top of that first, Maddy Puente started with her toughest inning and from there each stanza would get easier as her 21 pitch 1st inning would be much more compared to her 4 pitch 5th inning.

“I will do whatever we need and play one pitch at a time,” Jodi Glenn-Millhouse said in response to leading off when Marley Carrizales was nursing an injury. “I just kept my composure and stayed calm.”

The Puente Sisters (Kaylee & Maddy) team up for an awesome duo in Hawk Softball.

Jodi has been the Centerfielder this season and has been using her speed to cover a lot of area, “I love playing centerfield and I love Canyon Lake as this feels like a second home!”

CL got their final run with a hard hit to left-center field that went to the fence. Kaylee Puente was a jack-rabbit around the bases and scored on an overthrow to the 3rd baseman.

On what it is like not playing catcher and fielding at short-stop and hitting her triple when Carrizales is not in the lineup.

“I have been getting reps and working on my cuts,” Kaylee Puente assessed. “I am starting to understand the position and working on my cuts and that has made playing short a lot easier.”

Kaylee recalled her triple in the 4th inning, “I am noticing the umpire and during my first at bat the pitcher would throw her first pitch down the middle…I scooted up in the box (batter’s box) and I just got up to the plate and got a hit.

Canyon Lake will be in action on Monday when a solid Salado team comes to the Hawk Nest for a 2pm first pitch.

Come out this Spring Break and get behind this year’s CL Softball and Go Hawks!!
