How SWEEP IT IS, in Hawk’s JV over Boerne JV, 11-6 & 5-4
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity swept Boerne JV for the first time in Hawk history on the road on Tuesday, 11-6 & 5-4 to run their record to a sparkling 10-3-1.
The Hawks will not have too much rest as they will be back in action on Wednesday when Fredericksburg will battle it out with a double header starting at 10am.
The Lake surrendered 2 runs to the Greyhounds in the bottom of the first inning and responded with a 7 run top of the second that helped put this game in the win column and being helped by a Boerne defense that needed gloves in the game with 7 errors.
Jeremy Greene had a double and scored two runs and lead the Hawks with 3 hits. While Brayden Welch had a double and drove in 3 Hawks to help usher in a win to open up District 28-4A play.
Gunnar Walker continues his hot hitting with CL’s 3rd double and joining Greene and Welch with multiple hits with 2 in this affair.
“I keep going to the plate and trying to drive the baseball,” Gunnar recalls. “Hitting I the middle of the order, I am really trying to produce runs to help us win. I continued to work in practice with my swing and one of my goals was to add more power this year and I feel like my swing is moving in the right direction. I feel like I am really seeing the ball well right now.”
Hayden Baker got the win with 8 strikeouts and surrendering 2 earned runs.
“Early on, I was trying to locate my fastball,” Baker said a Dozen times. “My confidence kept growing as the game went on. Chase (Anderson) did a great job behind the plate and called a great game which gave me the confidence to throw any of my pitches. My curveball was working well today. It has really become my strikeout pitch.”
Canyon Lake followed the first game with 3 runs scored in those first two innings and did not trail in either contest. That 2nd encounter did have a closer finish but Bade Holland was able to earn a save while pitching another hitless inning giving this ‘Nolan Ryan’ look alike 8 hitless innings in his last 3 battles on the mound.
Zach Elson was the Hawk with a big hit that scored two runs and helped keep the distance for this double-header conquest.
That 2nd game had some good defense that had a magnifying glass on them based on the closeness in those closing innings.
With the Hawks leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 3rd, Boerne had 2 on and 2 outs and a line drive hit down the first base line that could have gone to the corner for extra bases….but Reid Simpson sprinted over and robbed that Greyhound a hit and a lead.
“Off the bat, I thought the ball was headed for extra bases,” Simpson said. “I just sprinted over as fast as I could and as I got closer, I felt I had a chance to make a play. I am glad I could help us win today.”
The game ended in the 5th inning and Boerne threatened again with runners on 1st and 2nd. A hard grounder up the middle had Travis Parma sliding over from second base and a flip over to Shortstop Brayden Welch for a force out would end the game and give the Hawks a sweep.
How SWEEP IT IS and now more to be done against Fredericksburg next.
