CLB’s, Georgetown East View Football Preview

               Week 3 - September 11th @Georgetown East View
               CLHS Hawks will be on the road and take on the
               Georgetown East View Patriots (Away)

The Georgetown East View High school is 78.5 miles from CLHS so it will be a hour & a half drive to this 5A-D-II opponent. The Patriots home field, which is the Georgetown Athletic Stadium, is located at 2275 N. Ave. Georgetown Texas 78626.

So, as we all know, every two years the UIL realigns districts & regions – however it is the coaches who go searching to realign their non-district schedules to find teams suitable for their liking, for the most part.

This year is no exception as the Hawks searched for teams to help maintain a typically tough non district football schedule. So keeping with that norm, the CLHS coaching staff found some new blood to temp the talons of Canyon Lake High School Hawks, with that school being the Georgetown East View Patriots.

This is our first time to match up with these Patriots and it will not be an easy road game for the Hawks, as these Patriots, are 25-4 in their first four games of their season for Non-district games dating back to their first season starting in 2012.

East View has stacked up back to back 6-5 seasons with each season having an undefeated start in non-district only to run into a wall against an 8 team tough district.

Does this type of record sound familiar? If your Jedi powers are in tune, then you just realized that this pretty much mirrors the Hawk’s last two seasons as well.

The Lake started off 7-0 and finished 7-4 in 2018. Last year a record of, 6-1 before a 0-4 finish.

Last season, East View started off with a, 4-0 record in non-district, then went 2-4 in district play and making the play-offs, only to end up losing to Kerrville Tivy, 56-33 in a Bi-district game.

This game will be a tough road game, but then again, the Hawks have seen 5A D-II & 6A D-II teams before and fared well with an overall historical record with a, 9-3 record.

East View’s district has a power house Brenham, along with Weiss (who hired Steve VanMeter from Hutto), Elgin, Marble Falls, Cedar Creek, Bastrop and Glenn. So it’s clear to see why these back to back 6-5 seasons may be a crude way to judge a team who might be better than their preceding records would indicate.

This year East View’s district will not be any easier as, EV has been a competitive football team historically racking a 41-44 overall record with their best season coming in, 2014 with a, 9-3 showing after losing their Area game to Kerrville, 35-17. Tivy seems to be their playoff nemesis.

East View began playing at the varsity level in 2012 and Head Coach Jerod Fikac is Canyon Lake’s version of Head Coach Matt Monzingo who started their program from that beginning year.

The Patriots will be returning 18 starters for this 2020 season and will have a horse stall full of capable running backs with two lead horses being, Senior RB # 24 Isaiah Quinton-Jackson at 5-9-185 carried 123 times for 735 yards, averaging 6 yards per carry which comes to 67 yards per game with 3-100 yard games and scoring 8 TD’s.

The other lead horse is #14 Senior RB Emarion Brooks at 6ft. 210lbs, who carried the ball 215 times for 1046 yards, with a 4.9 per carry and average and 95.1 per game with 5-100 yard games and 12 TD’s.

A small stat has each of these backs with three fumbles last season at critical times, which can stick with a player and be recognized by their opposing teams as a weak spot. Augmenting the run game will be Junior RB # 26 Aron Olague at 5-11 and 195 pounds.

These guys will line up behind four returning starters on the offensive line starting with Junior TE #45 Jacob Martin 6-3 230lbs. Martin usually lines up strong side and is a major factor in their blocking scheme as well as sliding off blocks for a tight end pass to a very big target racking up 199 yards receiving on 14 catches.

The rest of the returning line is Sophomore OL #54 Seth Kirklin 5-11 230, Junior OL 57, Cole Smith 6-2 235 and Junior OL McKenly 6-2 234. These are EV’s main guys opening up holes on a spread offense and making those lanes open for a spread with a very quick set of running backs to squirt through.

The Patriots defensively will have a formidable front line and Canyon Lake will have to move that big front line as the Patriots run a 5-2-4 defense switching over to 6-2-3 with a strong safety floating to strong side when playing a Slot T offense.

East View will have speed on their corners and at linebacker. Thomas Thornburg and Olauge have excellent speed and size with a varsity year behind them as well for experience in that linebacker spot.

The Patriots shotgun spread offense Quarterbacks will be either Junior #2 Tanner Ballew who is 6-5 220 pounds or Junior # 8 Jase Petty 6-1 185, which remains to been seen on who will win that spot.

East View will go Wildcat direct snap to Brooks or Quinton-Jackson which allows their offense to bring an extra blocker not only on 3rd and short but on 1st and 10 as well to offset an offense that had 2245 yard passing to match a 2075 yard running game with that balanced offensive approach they averaged 397 yards per game.

Either way the Hawks had better be ready to strap it on early for this long road game in Georgetown because East View’s balanced attack will keep a defense guessing one way or another for the entire game.
