Hawks JV Come up Short in Loss to Texan’s, 29-22
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity were on the wrong side of the scoreboard after a Wimberley, 29-22 loss.
“We learned with our sophomores that we will need to play with other guys,” Head JV Coach Bret Hodges said. “The spotlight is there for the taking and we will need to show up on Monday and get to work. If we are not getting better then we are getting worse.”
It was not hard finding the reasons for some of those worse moments in this game. Four turnovers for the Hawks while the Texans stayed away from those miscues. How about 84 yards of Hawk penalties while their opponent garnering just a 10 yard set back on their resume.
The Lake JV was able to cash in on two explosive plays. Landon McLaughlin with a beautiful 64 yard gallop that had the Hawks first score and then a 55 yard pass play when QB Coby Mickey finding a wide open AJ Acosta for a Hawk score that got CL within 8 points, 22-14 with still enough time to right this ship.
McLaughlin’s run was an impressive gallup that left those Wimberley defender’s, that had an angle, a nothing burger.
“As soon as I got the ball I saw a Big hole….it was huge,” McLaughlin recounted. “I wasn’t letting that guy tackle me so I just turned on the jets. We will need to get better and win the line of scrimmage and set after the ball next week.”
Taking away that 64 run had Canyon Lake with a pedestrian 3.3 yards per carry which looked like an old western where the good guys get stuck in some quick-sand.
Wimberley took just 3 snaps to up their lead back up to 15 points, 14-29 with just 3:22 left to play.
Canyon Lake was intercepted on their next drive which could have sealed the deal, but a resilient defense led to a Rylie Terry blocked punt giving the Hawks hope after recovering the ball on the Texan’s one yard line.
“I was surprised and I thought I had a clear path to the punter before one of their players came over to block,” Terry recalled. “I just pushed him to the ball and I wanted that ball but we recovered it.”
Being surprised should not be a common occurrence for Terry as this player has a knack for making an impact in games in not ordinary ways. Last year in a win over Fredericksburg, Terry had a memorable outing after recovering two Billie fumbles, had an interception and rushed for 51 yards on just 3 carries.
On this contest? “We will have to work harder as a team and during practice.”
Good words and now the Hawk Nation will wait to see that improvement next Thursday!
Let’s Go Hawks!!
